The Peacocks rallied late to take game one by a score of 4-3 and held on for a game two victory, 6-5 UIU won three of four against the Wolves of Northern State this weekend. With the series win, Upper Iowa improves to 16-24 overall including 12-13 in the Northern Sun. Northern State falls to 14-23 on the season and 7-15 in conference play.
Game One Recap
The Peacocks were the first ones on the board in the bottom of the third when
Rudy Casillas grounded out scoring
Cody Heiman from third base.
NSU then took the lead with a run in the fourth and tacked on two more in the top of the next inning. Upper Iowa, however, wasn't done adding three runs in the sixth inning.
With runners on second and third,
Taylor Brecht reached on an error by the centerfielder, Brent Lawrence, scoring both
John Dobson and
Ryan Kreiner. Casillas would later reach on the second error of the inning, this time by the shortstop Jack Thompson, scoring Brecht.
That is how the game would end up with UIU winning 4-3.
Rory Kolo took the no decision going five innings and giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits while walking five Wolves and striking out four of them.
Mitch Luebbe (2-1) receives the win after throwing one inning of one-hit ball while striking out and walking one apiece.
Cole Hanson is credited with his second save after giving up no runs on no hits.
Both
Tyler Adams and
Patrick Arntson each had multiple hits for the Peacocks.
Game Two Recap
Upper Iowa started the scoring early by putting up two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-RBI single from Arntson scoring both Casillas and
Mikey Henrichs. The hosts would add another in the next inning with a sac fly by Casillas bringing home
Juve Reyes.
Northern State would cut the deficit to two with a run in the top of the fifth.
UIU would push across two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-RBI double from Henrichs scoring both Adams and Brecht.
In the top of the eigth, NSU would score four runs on three hits to tie things up at 5-5.
Once again, in dramatic fashion, the Peacocks would end things in the bottom of the ninth thanks to two Northern State errors by the shortstop, Thompson. Kreiner reached on one and then
Andrew Kraus reached by way of an error scoring Kreiner to give Upper Iowa a 6-5 win.
Matt Treybig, the senior from Orange, California, started for the home team going five strong innings and only giving up one run that was earned, on one hit, while striking out six Wolves and walking just one.
Brett Westra was on in relief of Treybig and threw two innings of one-run, three hit ball. Hanson was unable to retire a batter before
Blake Seehusen (1-2) threw two shutout innings giving up only two hits and retiring one batter.
Four Peacocks turned in multiple hits including Adams (2-4), Henrichs (2-4), Arntson (3-4), and Brecht (2-3).
Next up, UIU goes on the road to take on the Marauders of U-Mary. The games are set for Saturday the 28th and Sunday the 29th with first pitch coming at 1 p.m. and 12 p.m. respectively. Upper Iowa then ends their regular season with a six-game homestand. A doubleheader against St. Cloud State on May 1st and a four-game weekend set with Minnesota State, Mankato on the 5th and 6th.
