Wildcats Claw Past Peacocks in NSIC Double Header

Wayne State 8 - Upper Iowa 4 | WSC 3 - UIU 2

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

The Wildcats of Wayne State College swept the Peacocks in a pair of NSIC baseball games this afternoon in Wayne, Nebraksa.  In game one, UIU could never keep momentum as their hosts answered each Peacock run with runs of their own in the bottom of the inning en route to an 8-4 win.  In game two, Wayne State scored three runs early and held on for a 3-2 victory.  The two losses push the Peacocks' skid to six games and drop their record to 13-23 overall and 9-12 in the NSIC.

Game One Recap

Each time the Peacocks put runs on the board in the first game, Wayne State would one-up them and score more in the bottom of the inning.  Wayne State never let the UIU runs translate to a momentum change.

Andrew Kraus singled in a run in the first inning with one out after Rudy Casillas singled and Mikey Henrichs doubled.  With runners on the corners and just one out, the Peacocks failed to push another run across the plate.

In the bottom of the inning, three Wildcat hits and a pair of walks allowed two runs to score for the home team.

Upper Iowa scored a run in the fourth to tie the game thanks to a single to center by John Dobson that plated Patrick Arntson, who singled to open the inning.

Once against, Wayne State answered before the Peacocks could get to the plate again.  The Wildcats scored four runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batsman.

Trailing 6-2, Upper Iowa looked to their leadoff hitter to get things started.  Tyler Adams singled, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and came home on a rbi-single to right by Mikey Henrichs.  A few batters later, Ryan Kreiner singled home Henrichs and the Peacocks were within two runs, 6-4.

The Wildcats got the runs right back with a single and two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Neither team scored over the final innings as UIU fell by four runs.

Fabian Lopez suffered the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits in 3.2 innings.

At the plate, UIU racked up 12 hits led by Adams and Kraus, who each tallied three hits in four at bats.

Game Two Recap

Brett Westra threw well for Upper Iowa but still took a hard-luck loss in game two.  The righthander allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings while striking out four.

Wayne State struck first with two runs in the third inning thanks to a trio of singles around a walk with two outs.  The final run for the Wildcats came in the fifth inning.  A hit batsman with two outs allowed a pair of singles to push home the eventual gamewinning run.

Upper Iowa finally got on the board in the seventh with a pair of runs to cut the margin to one, 3-2.  Dobson opened the inning with a double, and after a walk to Cody Heiman and a sac bunt by Taylor Brecht, the Peacocks had two runners in scoring position.  Adams drove one in with a single and Casillas plated the other run with a ground out.

The Peacocks left two runners on base in the eighth inning, but couldn't push the tying run across the plate.

At the plate, the Peacocks registered eight hits, one more than Wayne State with no UIU players grabbing more than one hit in the contest.

The Peacocks will finally return to Robertson Woods Field this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 21-22, for a home series with the Wolves of Northern State University.  Game one on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Sunday's action is set to begin at noon.
