Upper Iowa returned to Bulldog Park on Sunday looking to bounce back from a pair of defeats to Minnesota Duluth, but in the end the Bulldogs and Mother Nature had the final word. UMD picked up a 7-5 victory in a game that was shortened to five innings due to heavy rain. The second game was canceled. Following the loss, UIU sits at 13-21 overall and 9-10 in the NSIC.
The Peacocks scored four runs in the first inning on just two hits while being aided by a pair of Bulldog errors. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Ryan Kreiner hit a bases-clearing double to right center.
John Dobson then singled to bring Kreiner home and give the visitors a quick 4-0 lead.
UIU added a run in the second on another run-scoring hit by Kreiner. This time a single plated
Mikey Henrichs, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
The Bulldogs answered with a pair of runs after two outs in the third on back-to-back hits that followed a leadoff walk and stolen base.
UMD continued to put runs on the board in the fourth inning. The home team scored five runs taking a 7-5 lead. The big inning came thanks to six hits by the Bulldog bats.
The clouds then opened up in the bottom of the fifth, and after a delay, the game was called giving UMD the 7-5 win.
Rory Kolo suffered the loss after 3.2 innings. He allowed the 7 runs on 10 hits while striking out four batters.
Upper Iowa will close out their road trip on Wednesday at Wayne State College with a pair of NSIC game starting at 1:00 p.m. The Peacocks will return home this weekend for games for a four-game series with the Wolves of Northern State University on Saturday and Sunday.
