The Peacocks and Golden Bears came into the day tied for sixth place in the NSIC standings with identical 8-6 records, So it made perfect sense that if Upper Iowa dominated game one, that Concordia would answer the call in game two.
UIU picked up an 8-2 win in game one behind good hitting and a solid, complete game from
Fabian Lopez. CU earned the split thanks to the Northern Sun's reigning Player of the Week, Bryan Lippincott. After going three of four at the plate in game one, the Golden Bears' third baseman went five for five with four rbi and two runs scored while hitting for the cycle in a 15-7 win for the home team.
With the split, Upper Iowa and Concordia are still tied but have now moved into a four-way tie with Wayne State and Winona State for fourth place in the Northern Sun with a 9-7 mark. UIU now carries an overall record of 13-18.
In game one, the Golden Bears scored a run in the first inning, but Upper Iowa took over from there.
The Peacocks scored two runs in the third inning after
Tyler Adams led off with a single.
Mikey Henrichs and
Pat Arntson picked up rbi-doubles to post the runs.
Upper Iowa added a run in the fifth after
Rudy Casillas singled to open the inning and then stole second and third base allowing a grounder by Arntson to score the run.
Leading 3-1, the Peacocks put the game away in the sixth with five runs on four hits and were aided by a pair of Concordia errors. The highlights of the inning included an Adams rbi-single, Henrichs was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, another grounder by Arntson that plated a Peacock and a sac fly off the bat of
Ryan Kreiner.
Lopez took the 8-1 lead and closed out the game allowing just one unearned run on two hits in the seventh. The junior threw seven innings for his first win of the season allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five.
In the second game, Concordia raced out to a 12-0 lead and worked through two UIU pitchers after just six outs thanks to eleven hits and three Peacock errors.
The Peacocks nearly cut the gap in half with a five-run fourth inning. Arntson homered down the right field line with one out and
Cody Heiman followed with a two-run homer down the left field line with two outs. After a Golden Bear error, Adams doubled in a run and then scored on a single by Casillas.
Upper Iowa climbed within six, 12-6, with a run in the sixth thanks to another Casillas rbi-single. While the Peacocks were clawing back into the game,
Blake Seehusen was throwing well on the mound to silent the CU bats for three innings.
The home team broke out for two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh while keeping their guests to just one trip across home plate en route to a 15-7 win.
The final UIU run came in the eighth when
Matt Corbitt doubled and scored on a Heiman single up the middle.
Corbitt had three hits in the game, while Adams, Casillas, Arntson and Heiman all had two hits.
Upper Iowa heads back to Minnesota this weekend for a four-game set against the Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 14-15.
