Peacocks Split with Mustangs on Day Two

Upper Iowa avoided the series sweep today against the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State with a 6-2 victory in game one but dropped the final game of the four-game set by a 2-1 count. The Peacocks now sit at 8-15 overall including 4-4 in the Northern Sun. Southwest improves to 13-6 and 3-1 in conference play after their first NSIC series of 2012.

Game One Recap

Patrick Arntson led off the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI single from John Dobson. Juve Reyes then reached on an error from the third baseman scoring Henrichs from third. Taylor Brecht then advanced both Dobson and Henrichs with a SAC bunt before Tyler Adams would walk to load the bases for Rudy Casillas. Casillas would reach on yet another error, this time by the Mustang second baseman, scoring Dobson.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Casillas reached by way of a single, Andrew Kraus was hit by a pitch and Arntson walked to load the bases. Two batters later, the new Southwest pitcher Steven Wehr, on in relief of Bryce Rippentrop, threw a wild pitch scoring the fourth run of the game for UIU in Casillas.

SMSU finally got on the board in the top of the sixth with a two-RBI double from Steven Kremer scoring both Jon Ellis and Tyler Flattum.

In the bottom half Upper would tack on two more. Reyes reached on single, advanced to second on a balk and then was sacrificed to third by Brecht. Reyes would score on an RBI double from Adams. Casillas would then single home Adams.

Mario Madera (3-0) recevied the complete game win by going seven innings and giving up only two runs, both earned, on seven hits. Madera struck out three Mustangs while walking two. Both Adams and Casillas were the lone Peacocks with multiple hits.

Game Two Recap

Upper Iowa brought across only one run and that came on an RBI single from Henrichs scoring Arntson.

Neither team would score again until the top half of the ninth inning when Brian Ness would push Southwest ahead 2-1 with a shot to right field. The round-tripper brought Adam Thygesen home as well. Uiu would be unable to extend the game in the bottom half and take the 2-1 loss.

Tyler Beck (1-1) took the mound for his first start of the season. Beck threw eight innings giving up the two runs on five hits, while striking out five as well as walking five Mustangs. Miguel Helguera threw an inning of relief as well.

Jeremy Schmidt led the way for SMSU lasting seven and a third innings and gave up just one unearned run on five hits while striking out three and walking two.

Derek Skovbroten (2-0) gets the win after pitching an inning and two thirds of shutout, one-hit ball.

Next up, Upper Iowa travels to Winona, Minnesota to take on the Warriors of Winona State University in a doubleheader on April 3 set to begin at 1 p.m. The Peacocks then head to Bemidji, Minnesota to go up against the Beavers of Bemidji State University in a pair of doubleheaders on April 6 and 7. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. that Friday and noon on Saturday.
