Upper Iowa Lose Two Close Games at Clearwater Baseball Invitational

Oakland City 7 - UIU 6 || Cedarville 3 - UIU 1

Upper Iowa let a late-inning lead slip away in their first game of the Clearwater Baseball Invitational with Oakland City and then lost a 3-1 decision to Cedarville in game two to fall to 1-5 on the season.

The Peacocks scored a run in the first thanks to a leadoff double by Tyler Adams; he later scored on an error.  In the second, UIU added a run when Adams singled to push Ryan Kreiner across the plate.  Oakland City rallied with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

Upper Iowa cut the gap in half with a run in the sixth and then took the lead in the seventh with three runs.  The big seventh led off with a double from Andrew KrausPatrick Arntson and Matt Corbitt hit a pair of singles to score the first run.  Arntson scored on an error and Corbitt scored on a Anthony Delgado single as UIU went up 7-4.

Unforturnately, OCU put a run on the board in the eighth and added two more in the ninth to steal the victory, 7-6.  Miguel Helguera took the loss in relief for Upper Iowa.

In the second game, the Peacocks trailed Cedarville 2-0 heading into the top of the fifth when John Dobson led the inning off with a double.  Juve Reyes singled to push the Peacock catcher to third and Dobson scored on a fielder’s choice by Ryan Citro.

The Peacock offense couldn’t generate any more runs though, as Cedarville added an insurance run in the seventh to claim the victory 3-1.

Brett Westra threw well allowing the three runs while scattering 10 hits over seven innings.

The Peacocks will face Oakland City again on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
