Upper Iowa dropped the first two of a four-game set today with the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University. The Mustangs took an 11-inning game one by a count of 6-3 and game two by a score of 6-2. With the two losses, the Peacocks drop to 7-14 overall including 3-3 in Northern Sun play. SMSU improves to 12-5 on the season and 2-0 in the NSIC.
Game One Recap
Andrew Kraus opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single scoring
Tyler Adams from second base. Adams reached base with a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Rudy Casillas.
UIU tacked on a second run in the fourth inning thanks to a single from
Mikey Henrichs scoring
Patrick Arntson from third base. The Peacocks again used small ball to manufacture a run as Arntson reached on a single, advanced to second on a SAC bunt from
Ryan Kreiner and made his way to third on a groundout.
The Mustangs finally got on the board in the sixth inning with a run-scoring single from Tyler Flattum bringing in Brian Ness from third. SMSU tied the game up at two runs apiece the very next inning. Ben Korger hit a SAC fly to center scoring Chris Eichten.
The score would remain deadlocked for the next three innings before Southwest put up four runs in the top of the 11th inning. Korger doubled in two runs and then Adam Thygesen let him jog home with a two-run shot to left field.
UIU would push across just one run in the bottom half of the inning when Adams reached on an error scoring Casillas.
Matt Treybig didn't receive a decision after going six innings and giving up two runs, both of which were earned, on four hits. Treybig walked five while setting down four Mustang batters.
Cole Hanson received the loss after throwing four and two thirds innings and giving up four runs, all of which were earned, on four hits while walking five and striking out two.
Blake Seehusen struck out a batter in a third of an inning of relief. Henrichs and Adams were the only Peacocks with mutiple hits on the game.
Game Two Recap
SMSU struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Thygesen scoring Korger.
Upper Iowa came right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame. Casillas hit a double and then while stealing third, the pitcher Aaron Johnson threw an errant pickoff to third. The throw got past the third baseman and rolled all the way to the left field wall by the bullpen allowing Casillas to jog home easily and tie the game up at one run apiece.
Southwest Minnesota State began to assert themselves in the top of the fourth inning scoring three runs and two more in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
in the bottom half of the sixth, UIU scored their final run after Casillas scored on a dropped third strike.
Taking the loss for the Peacocks was
Brett Westra who lasted four and two thirds innings and gave up six runs, all earned, on eight hits while striking out two and walking just one. In relief,
Daniel Riggs threw one and a third innings of shutout, no-hit ball while striking out one Mustang and walking three more.
Miguel Helguera also threw an inning of relief giving up no runs on no hits.
Johnson led the way for the Mustangs going seven strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits, once of which was earned, while walking none and striking out nine Upper Iowa batsmen.
Upper Iowa looks to avoid the sweep with two more against the Mustangs beginning at noon.
