Upper Iowa 3 - Minnesota, Crookston 1 || UIU 11 - UMC 1 (7)

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

The Peacock baseball team picked up a sweep over the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota, Crookston with a 3-1 win in game one and an 11-1 decision in game two.  Upper Iowa opened both their home and Northern Sun Conference schedules on Saturday in Fayette.  UIU defended Robertson Woods Field, but had to rally from a one-run deficit in game one for the win.  In game two, the Peacocks offense took advantage of the Golden Eagles' control issues on the mound and miscues in the field.  On the day, UIU tallied 19 hits to post their 14 runs and both Matt Treybig and Brett Westra earned their first wins of the year throwing complete games.

Game One Recap

The Peacock threatened in the bottom of the fifth after Matt Corbitt led off with a bunt single and stole second base.  Mikey Henrichs followed with a walk giving the home team runners on first and second with no one out.  The threat was dismissed quickly though as the Golden Eagles recorded the first out catching the lead runner on a sac bunt attempt and then ended the inning with a double play on a strike out and pickoff at first.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of a pair of two-out doubles to notch the first run of the game in the top of the sixth.

Tyler Adams led off in the bottom of the inning and single down the left field line.  He stole second and then advanced to third on a bunt single by Rudy Casillas.  The Golden Eagles caught Casillas off first, but the pickoff attempt failed and gave UIU two runners in scoring position with no outs.  A quick comeback grounder to the pitcher didn’t allow the runners to advance, but did give UMC their first out.  Pat Arntson singled to shallow right centerfield plating both Peacocks and pushing the home team into the lead.  Singles by Ryan Kreiner and Corbitt loaded the bases again with still just one out.  Henrichs earned an rbi with a sacrifice fly to left field plating Arntson.  A ground ball ended the inning, but Upper Iowa’s five hits powered them to a 3-1 lead entering the seventh.

Matt Treybig closed out the seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts to earn the complete-game victory and grab his first win of the season.  Casillas led the Peacocks with three hits, while Adams and Corbitt each tallied a pair of hits.

Ben Lazzarri (0-3) took the loss for Minnesota, Crookston despite throwing a good game on the mound for UMC.

Game Two Recap

Upper Iowa wasted little time taking a lead with five hits in the first inning.  Arntson pushed the first run across the plate on an infield single to the hole at short and scored a run from second base when Corbitt singled up the middle.

The Golden Eagles picked up one run in the top of the second with a pair of hits around a wild pitch.

Cody Heiman was hit by a pitch with one out in the second and moved to third thanks to a stolen base and a wild pitch.  Adams plated run with a triple to the right centerfield gap and scored on a sac bunt by Casillas that the Golden Eagles misplayed.  The two runs gave the home team a 4-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth after a pair of singles and a hit batsman.  Brett Westra worked out of the jam forcing the UMC bats into three pop ups including two on the infield.

UIU’s Heiman reached third base once again in the fourth thanks to a walk, wild pitch and ground out by Adams.  Casillas pushed the Peacock second baseman home with a slow roller up the middle that the Golden Eagles converted into the second out of the inning.

The Peacocks loaded the bases in the fifth with one out fueled by two walks and a hit batsman.  Juve Reyes became the second straight player to be hit by a pitch picking up a run batted in as Ryan Kreiner crossed the plate.  Heiman earned his second rbi of the season with a ground ball that plated Corbitt and John Dobson scored as the relay throw to first got away.  The three runs came with no hits, but gave the men in blue an 8-1 lead.

Upper Iowa continued to pull away in the sixth adding a pair of runs thanks to three hits.  The first run came on a UMC throwing error and the second came when Kreiner singled to centerfield putting the Peacocks ahead by nine runs.

The home team ended the game in the seventh due to the run rule after scoring a run and claiming the 11-1 win.  Upper Iowa put the first two batters on the base paths thanks to walks and after a ground out and infield single the bases were loaded.  A passed ball allowed Heiman to come home and put the final run on the board for the Peacocks.

Westra earned the win and evened his record at 1-1 after throwing seven innings and scattering six hits while allowing just one run and striking out three batters.

At the plate, Casillas, Kraus and Kreiner all had two hits, while Casillas led the team in runs batted in with two.  Heiman scored three runs for the home team.

The two teams will return to Robertson Field tomorrow for another double header beginning at noon.
