The Peacock baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to the reigning GLVC Champions.  Quincy defeated Upper Iowa 5-2 in game one and then held on for a 9-7 victory in game two.  With the two losses, UIU falls to 4-9 on the season.
 
Game One Recap
 
The Hawks of Quincy struck for two runs in the bottom of the second after a hit batsmen and a walk put two runners on with no outs. A double and a sacrifice fly scored the runs for the home team before Upper Iowa got out of the inning without further damage. Quincy added a run in the next inning with a pair of hits.
 
After coming up empty with runners on second and third and one out in the fourth and runners on the corners with two outs in the fifth, the Peacocks got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth cutting the margin back to one, 3-2. Rudy Casillas opened the inning with a single and stole second. Casillas and Andrew Kraus, who was hit by a pitch, both stole bases to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Ryan Kreiner drove in UIU’s first run with a grounder to short and Matt Corbitt drove in the second with a single to right center.
 
Quincy regained their three-run lead in the next half inning thanks to a homeurn that scored two and put the Hawks ahead, 5-2. The Peacocks went quietly in the seventh falling by three runs.
 
Daniel Riggs took the loss for UIU throwing the first two innings and allowing two runs on just one hit. Mitch Luebbe completed the game in relief throwing four innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out one Hawk.
 
At the plate, UIU was limited to just four hits. One each by Casillas, Kraus, Kreiner and Corbitt.
 
Game Two Recap
 
The Peacocks scored the game’s first run in the top of the first when Tyler Adams singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
 
The lead was short-lived though as the Hawks scored two runs in the first and exploded for six runs in the second opening an 8-1 lead after the first two innings.  The big inning for Quincy was highlighted by a grand slam.
 
Upper Iowa’s rally started in the top of the third as the team put three runs on the board on three hits.  Kraus picked up the first rbi on a ground out and Casillas scored UIU’s second run on a throwing error by the Hawk’s shortstop.  Juve Reyes plated the final run of the inning with a walk.
 
The comeback continued in the fourth as UIU got a sacrifice fly from Pat Arntson and an rbi-single off the bat of Corbitt.  The two runs pulled the visitors within 8-6.
 
In the fifth, Upper Iowa registered three hits but only managed one run on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Kraus that scored Adams, who had doubled with one out in the inning.
 
Leading 8-7, Quincy scored an insurance run in the sixth on a leadoff homer to left field and the Upper Iowa bats came up short in the final inning dropping the second decision 9-7.
 
Blake Seehusen took the loss for UIU after facing 12 batters over an inning-plus.  The freshman hurler allowed six runs on four hits.  Tyler Beck and Cole Hanson threw well in relief to allow the Peacock bats an opportunity to rally.
 
At the plate, Adams and Casillas set the table all game combing for seven hits and six runs for UIU.  Casillas went a perfect 4-4 at the plate with two runs, while Adams went 3-4 with four runs scored.  Corbitt also added two hits in three at bats.
 
The Peacocks will open their home schedule at Robertson Woods Field against the University of Minnesota, Crookston this Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 24 and 25. The four-game series with the Golden Eagles will feature a seven-inning game and then a nine-inning game to follow each day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
