Bearcats Outlast Peacocks in Season Opener

Southwest Baptist 12 - Upper Iowa 7

BOX SCORE

The Bearcats of Southwest Baptist spoiled Upper Iowa's season opener on the diamond in Bolivar, Mo. Friday afternoon.  The home team jumped out to a 10-0 lead after just three innings and held on for a 12-7 win.

The Bearcats scored four runs in the first, three in the second and three more in the third to put the Peacocks in a huge hole.  Peacock starter Matt Treybig gave up the runs on 12 hits in his three innings of work.

Southwest Baptist registered five extra base hits in the first three innings including three triples and a pair of doubles.

A pair of singles by Juve Reyes and Ryan Kreiner followed by a pair of fielding errors gave Upper Iowa their first two runs of the day in the fourth inning.

The Peacocks added one in the fifth as Andrew Kraus singled with one out and came home on a double by Patrick Arntson

Reliever Brett Westra allowed a run in the fifth on a pair of hits from the Bearcat bats, but the offense got the run right back in the top of the sixth.  Tyler Adams singled with two outs, stoled second and came home on a Mikey Henrichs single.

The home team's final run came in the bottom of the seventh and was unearned after an Upper Iowa fielding error opened the inning.

Trailing 12-4, the Peacocks took one final shot in the top of the ninth.  An Arntson ground-rule double with two on gave UIU a run and left two in scoring position.  Matt Corbitt picked up an rbi plating Kraus on a sac fly to rightfield.  Reyes recorded the final rbi on a ground out that scored Arntson.

Upper Iowa's rally fell short as Southwest Baptist claimed the 12-7 win.

Adams, Kraus, Arntson, Reyes and Kreiner all tallied two hits for the Peacocks while Henrichs picked up the final hit at the plate for UIU.

The Peacocks and Bearcats will return to Dodson Field tomorrow for a double header beginning at noon.
