GAME NOTES

This Week in Peacock Baseball...  The Peacock baseball team opens their 2012 season this weekend in Bolivar, Missouri with a three-game set against the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University.  SBU kicked off their season on Monday with a win and a tie against Missouri Valley College.  The teams will line up for a nine-inning game on Friday at 1 p.m. and then match up for a double header on Saturday at noon.

Looking back…  UIU finished the 2011 season with a 24-26 record and a seventh-place finish in the NSIC with a 18-18 mark in league play. Upper Iowa was the only Northern Sun team to win its final game of 2011; the Peacocks won all four against Northern State in Aberdeen, South Dakota to finish the season.  The team finished its season winning seven of their last ten games.

Replacing the Ace…  The Peacocks lone All-NSIC performer from a year ago, Josh McKeon, is donning a different uniform these days with the Cleveland Indians minor league system.  The right hander wrapped his senior season with a 5-3 win-loss record, but dominated on the mound with a 1.67 ERA in 11 starts and 80.2 innings. McKeon only allowed 15 earned runs all season, while striking out 99 opponents. The 99 strikeouts are third most in program history; Randy Donisthorpe had 101 in 1995 and Travis Mueller had 100 in 1996 (both started 14 games). McKeon averaged 11.05 strikeouts per nine innings this season. He threw six complete games and earned two shutouts while holding opponents to a .189 batting average.

Looking Ahead… After the opening series with the Bearcats, Upper Iowa will head to Florida for eight games in six days.  The Peacocks will open their southern swing at Barry University in Miami on Monday, Mar. 5.  UIU will then compete in the Clearwater Baseball Invitational from Tuesday, Mar. 6, till Saturday, Mar. 10.  The Peacocks will line up with Oakland City University on three occasions, Cedarville University and East Stroudsburg University twice each.  All games on the trip will be nine-inning affairs with two games being played on Tuesday and Thursday.

Returning to Robertson Woods... The Peacocks are scheduled to play their first series at home on Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 24-25, against the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
