Peacocks Travel to Winona State for Lone Game This Week

Upper Iowa will head to Winona, Minn. for this weekend's NSIC match up on Saturday at 5 and 7 p.m.

This Weekend’s Northern Sun Contests…  After falling to the Huskies of St. Cloud State and the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul last weekend, the Peacocks will look to rebound as they travel to Winona State to face the Warriors.  Upper Iowa will benefit from the return of senior Jeri Jacobson who did not play last weekend due to injury. The match up of travel partners will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11, with tipoff slated for 5 p.m.  UIU will look to avenge their 77-74 loss to Winona in the opening weekend of Northern Sun play this past December.
 
Looking at the NSIC Standings…  After a split on the road last weekend, the Warriors are now positioned in the 6th spot on the NSIC leaderboard with a 9-8 record.  The Peacocks enter the week in last place in the standings posting wins over Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State in Dorman Gym.
 
Leading the Peacocks…  Whitney Kieffer leads the Peacocks with 15.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. Jeri Jacobson also averages double figures with 13.7 and is pulling down 6.3 rebounds. Jennifer Herrick is netting 7.2 points, while Laura TerHark is adding 5.5 points. Lyndsay Westgaard is averaging 5.3 points and 2.8 rebounds, while Ashlee Bailey is scoring 3.9 points and 4.5 rebounds.

This Year’s First Game against the Warriors…

In a game that featured 78 free throws, WSU hit the final three, which proved to be the difference in their 77-74 victory. UIU converted 76% of their free throws scoring 32 points at the line, but Winona State used 45% shooting from three to counter. The Warriors jumped on the Peacocks to open the second half and extended their lead to ten, 46-36. UIU responded with an 8-0 run thanks to six points from Jacobson. The visitors slowly edged out to an eight-point advantage with five minutes to play, but the Peacocks made one final rally. UIU hit 10-11 from the charity stripe during the final five minutes to pull within two, 74-72, with 30 seconds to play.

This Weekend’s Northern Sun Contest… The Peacocks look to return to the win column this weekend with an upset of the Northern Sun Conference’s top dog and #3 ranked team in the country.  Upper Iowa will travel to Winona, Minn. to face the Warriors of Winona State University on Saturday for this week’s only contest.  The rematch between UIU and WSU will tip at 7 p.m. following the women’s game. 
 
Leading the Peacocks…  Tucker Wentzien leads the Upper Iowa offense averaging 13.6 points per game.  The junior from Solon is also pulling down 7.2 rebounds and is shooting 52.2% from the field. Sam Elgin is also netting double figures with 11.5 points a game and is also second on the team in rebounding with 4.6 boards, while Jake Hughes is averaging 8.3 points and dishing out 2.3 assists per game. Joey Woods is averaging 8 points and Mike Lafrenz is averaging 6.6 points; both players come off the Peacock bench. Brad Arnold is averaging 6.5 points per game and 3.1 rebounds. As a team, the Peacocks are shooting 37.4% from behind the arc and are averaging 12.5 turnovers.

Winona State dominated the second half of the team’s first meeting in Fayette.  The Warriors shot 65% in the second half to run away with a 27-point victory.  The Peacocks trailed by just five points with 2:20 to play in the first half after cutting down a WSU 12-point lead thanks to a 12-5 run over a four minute span.
