The Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul jumped out to a 19-point halftime lead en route to a 79-57 NSIC victory over the Upper Iowa women’s basketball team tonight.
Carly Pagel and
Whitney Kieffer accounted for 38 of UIU’s scoring total on the night, while Anika Whiting dropped 24 points in for the home team. The loss marked the fourth straight for UIU. Upper Iowa falls to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in the NSIC, while Concordia improves to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The Golden Bears used the first five minutes of the contest to race out to a 13-4 lead, but the Peacocks were able to quickly cut the gap back to four with a layup and free throw from Pagel and a layup for Kieffer. Upper Iowa would not get any closer as the home team launched a scoring assault on their guests. Concordia went on an 18-3 over the next eight minutes pushing difference to 34-15 with four and a half minutes to play. CU claimed a 37-18 lead at the break and Pagel accounted for 11 of UIU’s total.
The home team continued where they left off at the beginning of the second half with an 8-2 run in the first two and a half minutes to pull ahead by 25 points, 45-20. The Peacocks scored seven straight to cut the margin back to 18 thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play and a pair of bunnies for Pagel. Over the next ten minutes, Concordia responded and extended their lead to move ahead by 29 points, 69-40, outscoring Upper Iowa by eleven in that span. In the end, the first half deficit proved to be too much as UIU fell, 79-57.
For the game, Pagel and Kieffer combined for 13 of 20 shooting, but the rest of Upper Iowa hit only 6 of the remaining 39 shots. Pagel led the Peacocks with 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Kieffer finished with 17 points and 9 boards. Upper Iowa accounted for only 5 assists on the night, while turning the ball over 23 times.
UIU will head to Minnesota State University, Mankato tomorrow evening for a 6 p.m. tip with the Mavericks.
