Upper Iowa finished their run at the 34
th Midwest Classic Invitational on Sunday afternoon and placed seven wrestlers including a pair of champions in the form of
Bryce Lumzy and
Carl Broghammer. The Peacocks racked up 118 points over the weekend claiming runner up honors behind #5 Newberry. The second place finish marks the third straight year that UIU has claimed runner up honors at the Midwest Classic.
After Lumzy (157) and Broghammer’s (197) titles, the Peacocks’
Wade Gobin claimed a second place in the 165-pound bracket and
Jordan Rinken placed fourth at 149 pounds.
Lumzy won all five of his matches and scored 27 points for Upper Iowa. The redshirt senior earned the most falls in the tournament as well picking up pins in three of his five matches. Lumzy defeated Austin Harris of Western State with a pin in the first minute of action and then earned a 14-1 major decision over Chuck Holmquest of Manchester to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, the 157-pounder won by fall (1:12) over Zach Vargo of Lake Erie College. On day two, Lumzy opened his day with a win by fall (4:39) over the #2-ranked wrestler in Division II, Taylor Knapp of Newberry. He then closed out his run to the title with a 6-3 decision over Conor Young of Campbellsville.

The redshirt junior sandwiched a pair of major decisions over Ashton Brown of Findlay (9-1) and Justin Tribble of Limestone (10-1) around a second round pin (4:51) of Gregory Cameron of Lincoln to earn his ticket to the second day and the semifinals. Broghammer scored a third period pin in the semis against Julian Smith of McKendree to get his shot at the title. The Manchester, Iowa native lined up against Matt Baker of Maryville (#2 NCAA) in the finals and avenged a loss to Baker in last year’s NCAA Regional. Broghammer earned the 5-4 decision thanks to an escape in the first tie breaker period.
Gobin earned 20 points for Upper Iowa while posting a 4-1 record and a runner up finish at 165. Gobin opened his action with a pair of wins by fall over Trevon Jordan of Trine (2:53) and Shawn Seppala of Western State (5:34). A 10-5 decision over Tyler Loethan of Central Missouri gave Gobin a 3-0 record and spot in the semifinals. The Cannon Falls, Minn. native edged Nicolas Haferkamp of McKendree in an 11-8 match, but dropped a 5-1 decision in the finals to Matt Vandermeer of Lake Erie (#3 NCAA).

Rinken was undefeated in three matches on Saturday winning by a 13-2 major decision, a 3-2 decision and a win by fall (4:34) over Jan Ulinski of Findlay.
