Box Score
The Peacock women’s basketball team outscored the Vikings of Grand View University by ten points over the final six and a half minutes to claim a 65-57 victory in Dorman Gym. Upper Iowa improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Vikings fall to 4-3. UIU’s offense finally broke loose and converted their opportunities at the line in a game otherwise controlled by the defenses.
UIU jumped out to 10-5 lead over the first six minutes, but Grand View answered and cut the gap to three points at the eleven minute mark. The Peacocks spent the next seven minutes slowly pushing the margin to seven. A
Whitney Kieffer lay-in with 4:04 on the clock gave the home team a 20-13 advantage. The Vikings, however, closed the half with strong defense and a 9-4 run that set the halftime score at 24-22 in favor of the Peacocks. Kieffer led Peacocks with 13 points connecting on 5 of 9 from the floor, while
Carly Pagel grabbed four rebounds and added a blocked shot in ten minutes of action.
Upper Iowa’s offensive struggles continued over the opening seven minutes of the second half as their first field goal UIU came with 12:38 to play on a
Jennifer Herrick triple. The three-pointer slimmed the Viking lead to one, 29-28.
Lauren Buck followed her own miss to tie the game at 30 with just over eleven minutes to play. Kieffer gave UIU the lead for a possession when she converted an old-fashioned three-point play at the midway point.
The home team turned their attention into the paint and Pagel scored on back-to-back possessions including one layup on a great pass from
Olivia Winkler.
Lindsay Carroll knocked down a trifecta with just over six minutes showing on the clock to give Upper Iowa the lead which they would not relinquish. Carroll’s long-range hit sparked an offensive final run for the home team in which they scored 26 points in six minutes. UIU’s defense played strong and only allowed 16 points during that span to give the home team the eight-point win. The Peacocks made 18 of 19 free throws over the final six minutes to seal the victory.
Keiffer finished with 28 points thanks to 8 field goals and 10 free throws; the sophomore also added 5 rebounds, 3 steals and a pair of assists. Carroll added 9 points due in large part to a 6 of 6 night at the charity stripe. Pagel was a presence in the paint with 6 points and 7 rebounds, while Herrick made her season debut and chipped in 9 points including two from beyond the arc.
Upper Iowa will now prepare for their trip to Alaska over the Thanksgiving break. The Peacocks will compete in the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational hosted by the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. UIU will take the court against the host Nanooks and also battle Winona State University and Anderson University.
