Rangers Outlast Peacocks in Defensive Battle

Wisconsin Parkside 60 - Upper Iowa 53

Box Score
Upper Iowa rallied from an early 18-point deficit to pull within one point late in tonight non-conference match up with the Rangers of Wisconsin Parkside, but the visitors outlasted the home team for a 60-53 win.  The Peacocks outscored their guests 47-36 over the final twenty-nine minutes of action, but the early hole proved to be too much to overcome.  With the loss, UIU falls to 1-1 and UWP improves to 2-0.

After falling behind 24-6, the Peacocks used the final nine minutes of the first half to climb back into the game thanks to a 20-8 run into halftime.  The offensive outburst was fueled by eight points from freshman Carly Pagel and six from sophomore Whitney Kieffer.  The Rangers put the final mark on the scoreboard in the first half with a free throw as the clock showed just one second remaining to take a 32-26 lead into the break.

Upper Iowa continued their strong defense in the second half holding the Rangers to just five points over the first six and a half minutes.  Unfortunately, the Parkside defense was also playing well and only allowed UIU to cut two points off the margin.  Midway through the second stanza, the Peacocks got within one point on two occasions, 43-42 and 45-44.  Each time, UIU's offense came away without a bucket that could have given them the lead.

After the two missed opportunities, Parkside went on a 10-0 run that lasted four minutes.  The Ranger defense held the Peacocks scoreless over that span forcing four turnovers and three missed shots.

Kieffer and Pagel combined to lead UIU on a 7-0 spurt that pulled the Peacocks within four, 55-51, with 1:46 to play.  After a Ranger free throw, Kieffer converted two free throws to bring the home team within three, 56-53.  The Peacock defense then forced a shot clock violation, but turned the ball over on their ensuing possession and UWP hit four free throws in the final 16 seconds to put the game away, 60-53.

Both teams mishandled the ball all night combining for 55 turnovers; 29 by the home team.

Kieffer recorded her second straight double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds.  The reigning NSIC Player of the Week added 5 steals.  Pagel scored 15 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, while Lindsay Carroll scored 9 points.

Olivia Winkler (5 pts) and Olivia Meier (3 pts) were the only other two UIU players to score.  Sam Thrapp handed out 5 assists.  The Peacocks won the rebounding battle 36-28 including a 13-2 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Jenna Endisch led the Rangers with 22 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists, while Jaleesa Trussell chipped in 8 points 3 rebounds and a pair of assists.

The Peacocks will stay at home this week and retake Prochaska Court in Dorman Gym for a final home non-conference contest with the Vikings of Grand View College on Friday, Nov. 16.  The tip is slated for 7 p.m.
