The Peacocks defeated the Huskies of St. Cloud State University for the second time this season tonight in central Minnesota. Upper Iowa, who won their second match of the season in five sets over SCSU, defeated their hosts in straight sets tonight winning by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-23. With the victory, UIU improves to 14-9 overall and 8-6 in the NSIC.
Upper Iowa held onto their grip of eighth place in the NSIC thanks to solid play on both sides of the net. UIU remains tied with Northern State University for the eighth spot in the standings.
An 11-3 run in the middle of the first set allowed the Peacocks to take a 22-18 lead en route to a four-point win.
A 7-2 run midway through the second set gave the visitors a 16-9 lead; UIU scored four of the final five points in the set to win by six points.
In the final set of the night, the teams battled point for point and were tied at 23-23. Upper Iowa scored the final two points of the night to claim the match win thanks to a pair of kills.
Hailey Brown led the Peacocks with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs; the sophomore added 3 assists and a block.
Melanie Behnke and
Jennifer Mundt recorded 9 and 7 kills, respectively, while
Skylar Lesan chipped in five kills and 28 assists.
Amanda Weiss tallied a match-high 11 digs, while
Kayla Wagner stopped 7 shots at the net.
The Peacocks will return home to Dorman Gym this coming Friday and Saturday for a pair of NSIC matches. Upper Iowa will host the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. and then welcome the #1 Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m.
