Huskies Control Overtime to Seize Victory from Peacocks

St. Cloud State 74 - Upper Iowa 68 (OT)

BOX SCORE

The Peacock men's basketball team played their second straight overtime game, but today in Dorman the home team came up on the short end of the extra period falling to St. Cloud State University by a 74-68 count.

Upper Iowa outshot their guests from the floor and behind the three-point line, but the Huskies took advantage of 35 free throws to claim the win.  The charity stripe was not so kind to UIU; the home team only hit 11 of their 22 opportunities at the line.

With the loss, Upper Iowa falls to 4-8 overall and 1-7 in the NSIC, while St. Cloud State improves to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in conference action.

The teams played a physical first half with St. Cloud State taking a slight, three-point advantage into the locker rooms, 32-29.  While the Peacocks made three more field goals then their guests in the first twenty minutes, the Huskies made nine free throws as their hosts made none.

Upper Iowa came out of halftime looking to take control of the game.  The Peacocks took a five-point lead, 42-37, with twelve and a half minutes to play after outscoring the Huskies 13-5 in the opening minutes.  SCSU trailed UIU for the next seven minutes, but with 5:20 to play the Huskies got a pair of free throws and took a 54-53 lead.

The lead changed hands six times over the final minutes with neither team taking more than a one-point lead. St. Cloud made one of two free throws with 10 seconds to play to push their lead to two points, 61-59.  On the missed free throw, Joey Woods rebounded the ball and drove the length of the court.  Woods adjusted in the air to avoid defenders and banked in a short jumper to tie the game and push the contest to overtime.

St. Cloud State scored the first nine points of the overtime period and never looked back.  UIU's first points in the extra period came on a three-point play by Jake Hughes with 1:11 to play.  After a SCSU turnover, Brad Arnold hit his third trifecta of the game to pull UIU within three, 70-67, with 33 seconds on the clock.  The road team hit their final four free throws to escape Dorman Gym with the 74-68 win.
