The Peacocks were in Bismarck, North Dakota tonight to take on the Marauders of U-Mary. The home team shot an even 60% from the field including 24-32 from inside the arc but the Peacocks forced 18 turnovers and converted them into 22 points. It took overtime and some clutch free-throw shooting from Upper Iowa down the stretch for them to take the contest by a count of 76-72. Upper Iowa gets their first conference win to move to 1-6 in NSIC play and 4-7 overall. UM falls to 2-10 overall and 1-7 in Northern Sun action.
In overtime, U-Mary led by one, 70-69, with just two minutes to play in the period. Upper Iowa would then take the lead thanks to five points from Tucker Wentzien and a stretch where UIU went 5-6 from the charity stripe to claim the four-point victory.
The first half featured four ties and three lead changes. Both teams shot well from the field as Upper Iowa shot an even 40% and the Marauders shot over 66% including 11 of 11 from inside the three-point line. U-Mary took advantage of a two-minute scoring drought by the Peacocks at the end of the frame to take a six-point lead, 32-26, into the half.
In the second half, the Peacocks had just one lead, 39-38, in the first 15 and a half minutes. That lead came just under four minutes into the second half thanks to a three-pointer from Bo Pagel. Upper Iowa wouldn't regain the lead until four minues and 33 seconds were left to play. The Marauders then tied the game up three times including 63-63 with two free throws to send the game into an extra period.
UIU's bench outscored that of U-Mary's 33-8 and used a 13-7 offensive rebound advantage to outscore the Marauders 18-12 in second chance points.
