Free Throws Push Northern State over Upper Iowa

The Wolves of Northern State University hit 16 free throws in the final six minutes to break a tie and defend their home court with a 71-66 win over Upper Iowa.  The Peacocks held a six-point lead, 48-42, with just under 10 minutes to play in the game, but the Wolves outscored their guests 29-18 through the remaining minutes to claim the win and drop UIU's record to 3-7 overall and 0-6 in the NSIC.

The two teams played evenly to open the game, but UIU broke free thanks to an 8-0 run that put the Peacocks ahead 17-10 with 12:30 to play in the first half.  A pair of free throws from Joey Woods, who made his first appearance of the season after sitting out the first half of the year with a foot injury, puthest the lead to eight, 27-19, as the clock showed just over five minutes to play. 

The Wolves rallied over the final five minutes with a 9-2 run to pull within one, 29-28, as the teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.

The game remained tight through the first five minutes of the second half, but UIU pulled away again fueled by a 10-4 run that put the Peacocks ahead by six, 48-42, with 9:39 on the clock. 

Northern State tied the game as the clock dropped to six minutes to play and the Wolves never trailed after that point in time.  The home team took their largest lead, 63-55, with 1:25 to play, but Upper Iowa rallied thanks to trifectas by Sam Elgin and Jake Hughes to pull within three, 67-64, with 21 seconds to play.  After the teams exchanged free throws, the Wolves hit the final two freebies of the game to claim the 71-66 win.

Upper Iowa shot 42% from the floor and 47% from the three-point line, but the Wolves 22-11 advantage in makes at the charity stripe proved to be too much to overcome.  NSU won the rebound battle by one, 33-32.

NEXT UP FOR THE PEACOCKS...

The Peacocks will get back on the court tomorrow night in Bismarck, N.D. against the Marauders of the University of Mary.  Upper Iowa and U-Mary will tip at approximately 8 p.m. following the women's game.  U-Mary lost to Winona State on Monday by an 83-72 count to fall to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in the NSIC.
