Upper Iowa picked up their second NSIC win of the season tonight against the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota, Crookston and snapped a three-game losing streak in the process. Upper Iowa got their second straight double-double from Tucker Wentzien as the junior center from Solon, Iowa led the Peacocks to a 61-48 victory to improve to 5-10 overall and 2-9 in the NSIC.
The lead changed hands five times in the opening eleven minutes as the teams were locked at 18-18 with 8:35 to play in the opening stanza. The Peacocks took control of the contest over the remaining minutes of the half outscoring their hosts 13-3 fueled by eight points from Wentzien. Upper Iowa's defense held Minnesota, Crookston to just eight field goals in the first half.
The teams played fairly even in the second half; UMC cut the lead to single digits on a few occassions, but each time Upper Iowa had the answer and pushed the margin back above ten points. The largest lead for UIU, fifteen points, came with just seconds to play as Jake Hughes hit a pair of free throws. Minnesota, Crookston scored the final bucket of the game to place the final margin at thirteen, 61-48.
Upper Iowa dominated the battle on the glass pulling down 38 boards, while the Golden Eagles only snared 25. Both Wentzien and Hughes tallied 10 rebounds for UIU.

Upper Iowa will look to build on this win as they return home to face the Vikings of Augustana College on Friday night, Jan. 20, and the Wildcats of Wayne State College on Saturday night, Jan. 21. Tip off for both games is scheduled for approximately 8 p.m. following the women's game. |
