The Peacock men's soccer team (1-3-1) continued their opening season road trip with a hard-fought 2-1 loss in Cedar Rapids this evening.
The Mustangs of Mt. Mercy College used a first half goal to claim a 1-0 lead. After UIU tied the match early in the second period, the home team claimed the lead back with twelve minutes to play and held on for the victory.
Enrique Cortina scored both Mustang goals; the first was assisted by Miguel Perez and the second was assisted by Henok Russell.
Derek Oelmann scored his third goal of the season with a strike in the 57th minute on a
Sean Kim assist.
Both teams took 13 shots, while the Peacocks put seven on frame and the Mustangs put five on goal. UIU couldn't take advantage of a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks though.
Upper Iowa will open the home portion of their 2011 schedule this Sunday as the team closes out Homecoming weekend on campus. The Peacocks will host the Jimmies of Jamestown College on Pattison Field following the women's match up against Jamestown at approximately 3 p.m.
