UIU 8 - Northern State 1 || UIU 6 - Northern State 3

Game One Box || Game Two Box

The Upper Iowa baseball team returned to Fossum Field in Aberdeen, S.D. on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the regular season with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchups against the Wolves of Northern State. After taking the first two games of the four-game set on Saturday, UIU capped off a weekend sweep of NSU by defeating their hosts 8-1 in game one and 6-3 in game two.

In game one, UIU led 2-1 heading into the top of the fifth before plating three runs in the inning to extend their lead to 5-1. Shortstop Rudy Casillas accounted for the first run of the inning before Pat Arntson stole home on a first-and-third double steal to notch the second run of the frame.

Walks plagued the Northern State pitching staff following the second run of the fifth. The final run of the three-run fifth inning was walked home before a pair of walks and a hit batsman allowed UIU to open the sixth inning with a run to make the score 6-1 in favor of the visitors. Arntson added an additional run in the inning when Rory Kolo grounded out to the pitcher to make the margin 7-1.

Upper Iowa scored again in the seventh to win the game 8-1. Junior pitcher Brett Westra tossed a complete game three-hitter for his first win of 2011. Westra struck out six while allowing just one earned run. Casillas and Kolo recorded four of UIU's 10 hits in game one.

UIU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning in game two when Casillas and Tyler Adams scored as Kody McCauley reached on a fielding error by the Wolves' second baseman.

NSU responded quickly and took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning before UIU posted three runs in the top of the sixth to retake the lead, 5-3. Adams highlighted the inning with a two-out, two-RBI double to right field.

The Peacocks added an additional run in the top of the ninth to win the game 6-3.

Hurler Matt Treybig scattered four hits in his fifth complete game of the season. The junior struck out six batters while giving up three earned runs.

Due to Minnesota Duluth sweeping UM, Crookston, UIU finishes the regular season in seventh place in the NSIC standings and did not qualify for the conference tournament.
