Game One Recap
The Warriors posted an unearned run in both the first and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Upper Iowa looked to claw back in the bottom of fifth when Mikey Henrichs opened the inning with a single through the left side. Matt Corbitt sacrificed Henrichs to second and the UIU catcher moved to third when Luis Rodriguez singled up the middle. Unfortunately, the Warrior starter Aaron Hoverson was up to the challenge stranding both Peacocks on the bases with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
The Warriors used a pair of one-out walks to add their third run of the game. The runners each advanced on a steal and WSU scored on a sacrifice fly by Seth McMullen.
The UIU bullpen spoiled a good effort by Peacock starter Eric Anderson as they allowed eleven runs on seven hits, two walks and a pair of hit batsmen in the seventh. The big inning for the Warriors gave the visitors a 14-0 lead heading to the Peacocks' final at bats.
Anderson took the loss and dropped to 0-2 on the season despite allowing just three runs, one of which was earned, in his six innings. The lefty gave up six hits while walking three and striking out one.
Hoverson earned the complete game shutout over UIU to improve to 2-0 on the year. The righthander held the home team to just three hits; they came off the bats of Henrichs, Rodriguez and Nick Bergeman.
Game Two Recap
Both teams got runners to third with less than two outs in the fourth, but neither team was able to push a run across the plate. In the top of the inning, the Warriors opened the inning with a double, but Treybig bore down and got UIU out of the jam. In the bottom of the inning, Mikey Henrichs led off with a double to wall in right center. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Juve Reyes, but was caught going home on a grounder to first base.
The Warriors threatened again in the fifth. After a leadoff single and sac bunt, a ball four got away from Treybig as the runners advanced to second and third with one out. Treybig was once again up to the task striking out the next batter and forcing a line out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
A pair of singles by Taylor Brecht and Rudy Casillas followed by a walk to Matt Smoley loaded the bases for the home team with one out in the fifth. Pat Arntson stepped in and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to push the first run of the game across and advanced the runners to second and third. A fly ball to right ended the inning, but not before UIU had taken a 1-0 lead.
Winona State looked as if they had tied the game in the top of the seventh as Tony Mueller attacked home plate from first on a double to right center with two outs. The relay appeared to be a half second late coming home, but catcher William Loza had the plate blocked and Mueller missed home plate. Loza applied the tag and ended the inning on the play.
The Peacocks brought their 1-0 lead into the ninth where the visitors opened the inning with a double off the glove of Smoley diving at first. After a walk, runners stood on first and second when a second rocket off a Warrior bat bounced off Smoley’s glove. The first baseman recovered, but threw the ball away attempting to get an out. When the dust settled WSU had tied the game and had runners on the corners with no outs.
Winona State scored the go-ahead run on the next grounder as the Peacocks chose to turn two and clear the bases. Three straight hits with two outs gave Winona State an insurance run as the visitors claimed a 3-1 lead thanks to five hits in the ninth.
Matt Corbitt singled to open the ninth and moved to second on a ground out. The Peacock leftfielder got to third on a second straight ground out, but was stranded there as the game ended on a strikeout.
Derek Wojcik threw two innings of relief and earned the win improving to 1-3 overall. Brandon Verthein claimed a no-decision with 5 innings of work allowing one run on six hits.
Treybig took the loss and fell to 2-3 overall despite running his scoreless inning streak to 23 before the ninth inning. For the game he threw 8.2 innings and allowed three runs, all in the ninth, on 12 hits while walking 2 and striking out 7 Warriors.
Bergeman and Casillas each had two hits for UIU, while Henrichs, Corbitt, Loza and Brecht accounted for the other hits.
