Minnesota State 4 – Upper Iowa 3 (Completion of Friday’s Game)
The Peacocks and Mavericks locked up in a low-scoring affair in the completion of yesterday’s second game. Upper Iowa scored a run in the first on an rbi-single by Pat Arntson that plated Nick Bergeman; Bergeman led the game off with a single.
Minnesota State posted two runs in the third and added a run in the fourth off Peacock starter Josh McKeon to take a 3-1 lead.
Matt Smoley led the seventh inning off with a single and came home when Matt Corbitt hit a two-out, two-run homer over the left field wall. The blast tied the game, 3-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Mavericks took advantage of their “last-ups.” MSU used a pair of singles around a sac bunt to put runners on the corners with one out. Steve Helget hit a grounder to second and the Peacocks tried to turn two and end the inning, but Helget beat the relay throw from second to first and the winning run crossed the plate.
McKeon took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. The right hander threw 6.2 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits, while striking out five Mavericks. Luke Putz picked up the complete game win allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out six Peacocks.
Minnesota State 12 - Upper Iowa 2
The Mavericks jumped all over the Peacocks and starting pitcher Matt Treybig with five runs in the second, a run in the third and four more in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead into the middle innings.
Upper Iowa put two on the board in the fifth inning after loading the bases with no outs. The Peacocks scored one run as the Mavericks turned a double play and then added the second on a throwing error.
Minnesota State added two runs in the sixth to claim the 12-2 victory.
Treybig (3-4) took the loss after allowing 10 runs on nine hits in just 3.2 innings. Bryce Bellin earned the complete game win for MSU after allowing two unearned runs on four hits while striking out six.
Minnesota State 3 - Upper Iowa 0
In the final game of the series, the Mavericks completed a series sweep of the Peacocks with a 3-0 shutout. Minnesota State scored a pair of runs in the fourth and added a run in the eighth for the only runs of the contest.
UIU loaded the bases with one out in the fourth thanks to a hit and a pair of Maverick errors, but were unable to push a run across the plate stranding all three runners. In the fifth, the Peacocks got runners to second and third with two outs, but couldn’t break through. The visitors sent the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Taylor Brecht doubled and Nick Bergeman singled to put runners on the corners with two outs, but once again the Peacocks couldn’t put a run on the scoreboard.
Eric Anderson (1-3) took the loss after throwing 7.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits and eight walks. T.J. Larson (1-1) was dominant for MSU throwing seven innings for the win and scattering four hits while striking out 9 batters.
