This Week in Peacock Baseball...
 
The Peacocks won four games last week thanks to success in all phases of the game. UIU hit .344 as a team led by five individuals above .350; Rudy Casillas (.462), Matt Smoley (.400), Pat Arntson (.370), Luis Rodriguez (.364) and Matt Corbitt (.360). The pitching staff recorded an ERA of 3.21 in 53.1 innings of work while striking out 50 batters led by Matt Treybig, Josh McKeon (1-0, CG, 0.00 ERA, 12 SO), Fabian Lopez, Eric Anderson and Mario Madera. Upper Iowa was also 9 for 11 in stolen base attempts.
 
Upper Iowa’s games with Wayne State, originally scheduled for Wednesday, were pushed back to this afternoon at 1 p.m. The Peacocks will then quickly travel to Minnesota State for a four-game set with the Mavericks on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 22-23.
 
Matt Smoley hit .400 last week with 10 hits in 25 at bats including a homerun against Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday. The Peacock junior scored four runs and drove in four runners while slugging .520 to lead the Peacocks to four wins in six games.
 
Matt Treybig started two games last week for UIU to earn a 1-0 record. Treybig defeated Concordia on Tuesday with a complete game and then threw 10 innings to earn a no-decision yesterday at Southwest Minnesota State. In his 17 innings of work, Treybig posted a 0.53 ERA after allowing 3 runs, only one of which was earned, on 9 hits while striking out 16 batters. Opponents hit just .153 against the junior righthander.
 
Scouting the Wildcats
 
Prior to last weekend’s action against #18 St. Cloud State, the Wildcats were tied with the Peacocks and two other teams in fifth place in the NSIC standings. 
 
Wayne State lost all six of their NSIC games last week, but they were facing two of the best in the league in Minnesota State and SCSU. The Wildcat offense managed only 14 runs for the week.
 
Mike Bisenius, a 6-3 200 pound junior outfielder from Sioux City, Iowa (Heelan HS), led WSC in hitting during the week with a .333 average going 7 for 21 at the plate with one double, one triple, one homer and five RBI’s. Bisenius was 4 for 7 in Sunday’s doubleheader at St. Cloud State with one double and one RBI and was 2 for 4 with a three run homer and RBI single with four RBI’s in Monday’s 14-5 setback to the Huskies.
 
Scouting the Mavericks
 
Minnesota State, 20-8 overall, 13-3 in the NSIC, returns home for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader against Augustana Thrusday at 1:30 p.m., then welcomes Upper Iowa to the MSU Baseball Complex for a pair of conference twinbills Friday (1:30 p.m.) and Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
 
Last Action: Minnesota State started its week at Wayne State for a pair NSIC contests, defeating the Wildcats 12-3 and 8-3...The Mavericks and Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus then played a a nonconference tilt on Monday, April 18 in St. Peter, Minn., with the Mavericks taking the single nine inning contest, 3-1.
 
Junior infielder Jeremy Sudbeck led the team with a .556 batting average, going 5-for-9 at the plate including two doubles... Sudbeck also scored a run and had four RBI...Another successful Maverick at the plate was senior outfielder Aaron Berner who went 4-for-10
with a team-high six RBI and four runs scored..Senior infielder Zach Rowles and junior infielder Pat Dockendorf each tallied three doubles,
leading the team in exra base hits...On the mound, senior Danny Miller (6-1), junior Blake Schwartz (6-1) and senior Luke Putz (4-1) each earn wins to improve thier records...Schwartz picked the most in his start, going 7.1 innings while also fanning a team-best 11.
 
Looking Ahead
 
Upper Iowa will travel to Mankato, Minn. on Friday, Apr. 22, for a four-game set with the Mavericks of Minnesota State on Friday and Saturday. 
 
The Peacocks will return to Fayette for a non-conference match up with Quincy next Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m.
