The Upper Iowa baseball team scored 36 runs on 32 hits in Sunday’s doubleheader as the Peacocks completed a four-game sweep of the Golden Eagles of UM, Crookston in Fayette. UIU took the first half of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference twin bill, 13-3, before winning game two, 23-11, in a run shortened game.
UIU opened the game with a run in the top half of the first inning before posted three runs in the second to lead 4-0. A Juve Reyes bases loaded single up the middle drove in two runs before Luis Rodriguez scored the third when Rudy Casillas reached on a fielder’s choice. UIU added to their total by scoring two runs in the third and four in the fourth to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
Patrick Arntson highlighted the fourth inning with a three-run blast over the center field fence.
UM, Crookston plated a run in the bottom of the fifth before scoring two more in the seventh to make the final tally 13-3.
Peacock hurler Fabian Lopez earned his third victory of the season allowing four hits while striking out a pair of Golden Eagle batters.
Rodriguez went three-for-four at the plate in the first game while Nick Bergeman and Eric Anderson each had two hits.
Runs remained plentiful in the second game as UIU and UM, Crookston combined for 34 of them. With UIU leading 6-1 in the top of the fourth, the Peacocks scored five more runs on just two hits to blow the game open and take an 11-1 lead The fourth frame was highlighted by a Taylor Brecht two-out triple which scored a pair of Peacocks runners.
The Golden Eagles posted four runs in their half of the fourth, but UIU scored 12 more runs over the last four innings to win the matchup 23-11 and complete the four-game sweep of UM, Crookston.
Arntson and Mikey Henrichs went three-for-four at the plate in game two while Brecht and Matt Corbitt each drove in four runs for UIU. Two of the runs for Corbitt came on a home run to left center field in the top half of the seventh inning, his first homerun as a Peacock.
Cole Hanson won his second game of the season as a starting pitcher by allowing eight hits over four complete innings of work.
With the four wins this weekend, UIU improves to 13-14 overall and 7-7 in league action.
The Peacocks will return to action this Tuesday, April 12, when the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul visit Robertson Woods Field in Fayette. The NSIC doubleheader is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
