Game One Recap

The first game on Friday felt like a real pitcher’s duel. Josh Foreman (2-1) controlled the Peacock bats through the first four innings and Josh McKeon (1-2) was almost untouchable on the hill for UIU recording eight strikeouts in the first four innings. But after the fourth, the Peacocks began to give the Bulldogs opportunities thanks to walks and errors.

The Bulldogs put the first runs on the board in the fifth with two on two hits. UMD took advantage of an error and a pair of walks, but left the bases loaded when McKeon struck out his tenth batter and forced a ground out. UMD added two more in the sixth and two unearned runs in the seventh off reliever Josh Luke.

The Peacock bats stayed silent through the first six innings as Mikey Henrichs had the only hit on a single in the fifth. Foreman had taken control of the game from the mound for UMD and earned the win thanks to his six innings of one-hit ball.

Upper Iowa finally got on the board in the seventh against reliever Max Ryan. UIU got three straight hits with two outs to score a pair of runs. A Kody McCauley single and a Pat Arntson double was followed by a two-run double to right centerfield by Henrichs to push the two runners home.

McKeon finished with 11 strikeouts in his 6 innings of work. He allowed 4 runs, 3 of them earned, while walking 5 Bulldogs.

Game Two Recap

Upper Iowa’s offense continued the success they had in the final inning of game one into the second contest. The Peacocks scored a run in the first and added three in the second and a run in fifth and sixth innings to post a 6-0 win.

The story of the game was Matt Treybig (2-2) though. The junior right hander from Orange, California ran his scoreless inning streak to 15 after today’s complete game shutout. The last time he gave up a run was in the first inning of his complete game, 1-0 loss to Bemidji State last Sunday. Treybig threw nine innings and allowed just three hits while walking six and striking out nine Bulldogs. The Peacock hurler got stronger as the game moved into the late innings picking up a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.

Nick Bergeman singled and later scored on a rbi-ground out by Matt Smoley. The Peacock s got three runs in the second highlighted by an Arntson single, a Matt Corbitt double, a sacrifice fly by Will Loza, a single by Taylor Brecht and a triple off the bat of Bergeman.

McCauley drove in Smoley in the fifth inning with a single to right center and Corbitt singled up the middle to force Arntson across the plate.

Bergeman, Arntson and Corbitt all tallied two hits on the day as the Peacocks won with nine hits as a group.
