The Peacock baseball team won their second straight game at the Clearwater Baseball Invitational this afternoon against the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville. Upper Iowa put six runs on the board in the second inning and held on for a 10-7 victory to improve to 3-4.
Cedarville stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second, but in the bottom of the inning Upper Iowa struck for six runs and added a run in the third and fourth to push out to an 8-5 lead. After Cedarville cut the gap to one with a pair of runs in the fifth, the Peacocks set the final distance at three runs with two runs in the eighth.
The Peacocks big second inning came thanks to some big hits and a Yellow Jacket error. Kody McCauley got UIU started with a two-run double and Nick Bergeman brought two more in with a single. Rudy Casillas drove in a run with a sac fly, while the final run scored when Bergeman crossed the plate on a throwing error on the infield.
McCauley picked up his third rbi of the day with a sac fly scoring Eric Anderson in the third, while Matt Smoley drove in Taylor Brecht with a single in the fourth.
The Peacocks final two runs came when Bergeman tripled and then scored on a wild pitch and Pat Arntson drove in Casillas with a sac fly.
Cole Hanson earned the win in relief as he threw five innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out a pair of Yellow Jackets. Tyler Beck started and threw four innings; he gave up five runs on seven hits.
Bergeman tallied three hits including a triple, the Peacock senior scored twice and drove a pair of UIU runners in. Arntson and Mikey Henrichs recorded two hits apiece.
Upper Iowa will play their fourth game in Clearwater tomorrow morning against Urbana at 9:30 a.m.
