This Weekend in Peacock Baseball…

The Upper Iowa baseball team will open their home and Northern Sun Conference schedule today and tomorrow with a four-game series against the Beavers of Bemidji State University. The Peacocks will host the Beavers at Robertson Woods Field in a pair of double headers. Both double headers will begin with a seven-inning game and be followed by a nine-inning game. Today’s double header will begin at 1 p.m., while the first pitch for tomorrow’s games will be at 12 p.m.

The Peacocks are coming off a successful spring break trip to the Clearwater Baseball Invitational where the team won five of their seven games. The four-game set with the Beavers was originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but cold temperatures and windy conditions pushed the series back a day.

Scouting Bemidji State…

The Beavers are 6-8 after posting a 1-5 record last weekend. BSU went 1-3 at Wayne State in non-conference play and then went 0-2 against Minnesota State in a non-conference double header played in Wayne, Neb. The Beavers used a four-run top of the seventh inning to erase a 10-7 defi cit and slide past the Wildcats 11-10. Sophomore Matt Ellinghuysen posted a career-high three hits (3-for-4), adding his fi rst-career homerun, two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Ryan Guy earned his first win of the season, throwing two shutout innings and allowing just three hits. Sophomore Ryan Brezinski posted the team’s first save of the season. BSU had a 3-1 lead after two innings in game one against MSU, but a six-run third for the Mavericks gave them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, en route to a 10-5 victory. The Beavers out-hit MSU in game two 5-3, but lost 5-0.

Looking Ahead…

Next week, the Peacocks will travel to Quincy, Illinois for a non-conference double header on Wednesday with the Hawks before returning to Fayette for a second straight weekend NSIC series with the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and Sunday, April 2 and 3.
