Peacocks Drop Season Opener in Rolla

Missouri S&T 4 - Upper Iowa 2

Box Score

The Peacock baseball team got on the field for their season opener today in Rolla, Missouri.  Upper Iowa matched up with the Miners of Missouri S&T in the first of three games scheduled between the teams.  After taking a 2-0 to the midway point of the game, Upper Iowa surrendered two runs in the middle innings and two more in the bottom of the eighth.  The four runs was all the Miners needed to post the victory 4-2.

The Peacocks struck first with a run in the third inning.  Pat Arntson doubled to left center and was chased home when Rudy Casillas singled to right for an rbi.  UIU added a second run in the fourth when Kody McCauley led off the inning with a solo blast to right.

The Miners answered right back with a run in the fourth on a Ben Pieper homerun to center off starter Josh McKeon.  The hit was just the second of the game allowed by McKeon through 3.1 innings.  MST tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on an rbi-double.

Drew Davenport hit a two-run homer to left off reliever Mario Madera in the bottom of the eighth to give the home team a 4-2 lead and eventual win.

McKeon threw 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 6.  Madera takes the loss in his first appearance with .2 innings and two earned runs on one hit and a hit batsmen.

At the plate, five Peacocks tallied one hit each led by McCauley's blast.  Nick Bergeman, Casillas, Matt Smoley, and Arntson picked up the hits.

Alex Dunn earned the win for the Miners with 3 innings of work in relief of Chris Bowe.  Dunn shutdown the Peacocks striking out 3 while not allowing a batter to reach base from the seventh inning on.

The two teams will be back on the field in Rolla tomorrow afternoon for a double header.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
