Tonight the Peacocks took on the Warriors of Winona State University in their Northern Sun opener. In a game that featured 78 free throws, WSU hit the final three, which proved to be the difference in their 77-74 victory. UIU converted 76% of their free throws scoring 32 points at the line, but Winona State used 45% shooting from three to counter. With the loss, Upper Iowa falls to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the NSIC. Winona State improves to 6-1 and 1-0 in conference action.
Over the first eight minutes of the game, the Warriors built up a five point lead, 16-11. The Peacocks then went on a 10-0 run to regain the lead, 21-16. The run was fueled by four of Whitney Kieffer's nine first half free throws (9-11) and four more points by Jeri Jacobson. Winona State would respond and come back to take the lead, 25-23, with four and a half minutes remaining in the frame. They would go up by as much as seven, but the home team would cut the deficit to two, 32-30, heading into the locker room.
The Warriors jumped on the Peacocks to open the second half and extended their lead to ten, 46-36, after just four minutes. UIU responded with an 8-0 run thanks to six points from Jacobson. The visitors slowly edged out to an eight-point advantage with five minutes to play, but the Peacocks made one final rally. UIU hit 10-11 from the charity stripe during the final five minutes to pull within two, 74-72, with 30 seconds to play. The home team was unable to get any closer as the Warriors claimed a 77-74 win.

Upper Iowa will remain at home next weekend for a pair of Northern Sun Conference games. The men's and women's doubleheaders will be against the Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday and the Beavers of Bemidji State University on Saturday. Both women's games will begin at 6 p.m. |
