For two sets this afternoon in Fayette, the Peacock volleyball team played some of their best volleyball of the season. Matching the #9 Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State point for point in the second and third sets today. In the end, SMSU's middles proved to be too much to handle as they combined for 27 kills in the four set win for the visitors.
Southwest Minnesota State came out strong posting a 25-15 win thanks to .395 hitting while holding UIU to just a .105 percentage.
In the second set, the teams played evenly through the midway point of the set, 15--15, but UIU scored 10 of the final 15 points to claim the 25-20 win and even the match heading to the lockerrooms.
In the third set, UIU worked out to a 15-12 lead, but maintained a one-point advantage, 21-20, as the end of the set neared. SMSU took advantage of a pair of service errors and a pair of attack errors to reach set point before claiming the 25-23 win.
The Mustangs edged out to a 10-9 lead in the fourth set, but Upper Iowa could not keep up with SMSU the rest of the way dropping the final set 25-15.
Brooke Burmeister (22 kills) led the SMSU attack from the outside, while Mary Groth (14 kills) and Alyssa Taylor (13 kills) were very effective in the middle. Cara Carson set the offense up with 53 assists.
For the Peacocks,
Sara Vance led the offense with 14 kills, while
Nicky Brown recorded 10.
Skylar Lesan dished up 39 assists.
Danielle Gernes led the defense with 23 digs, while Vance added 17.
Kayla Wagner picked up a solo block and four assisted blocks at the net.
Upper Iowa (13-11, 6-8 NSIC) will travel to the University of Minnesota, Crookston and Minnesota State University Moorhead next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28 and 29, for a pair of NSIC road matches.
