Box Score
The Peacock women's basketball team closed out a four-game road stretch Saturday afternoon when they visited the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn. for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup against Minnesota State, the second of two meetings between the teams this season. The Mavericks moved to 2-0 against Upper Iowa in 2010-11 when they won the matchup, 68-48.
With Upper Iowa trailing 10-8 early in the first half, the Mavericks took off on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes to extend their lead to 25-12 with just under 11 minutes to play before halftime. UIU answered right back with a 9-2 run of their own capped off by a Lana Otting jumper to pull the road team back within six points at 27-21. The Peacocks wouldn't get any closer through the remaining seven minutes of the first half as MSU lead 36-25 when the halftime horn sounded.
Jeri Jacobson paced UIU at halftime with 10 points. Shooting woes really hampered the UIU offense as the Peacocks shot just 11-for-34 (32.4%) in the first half and 1-for-11 (9.1%) from beyond the three-point arc. The Peacocks rebounded the ball very well in the first half by grabbing 14 offensive boards which allowed UIU to take eight more shots than MSU, but turned the ball over 10 times.
The Mavericks came out of the break poised to make short work of UIU in the second half by extending their lead to 16. However, Upper Iowa made a nice run mid-way through the second half and pulled back within five points, 49-44 when five different Peacocks netted a bucket in a four minute stretch which included a three-point shot from Jennifer Herrick.
Following a Jacobson jumper to close out the 11-0 run with 10:25 remaining in regulation, Upper Iowa wouldn't post another field goal for just over eight minutes as Minnesota State took the matchup, 68-48.
Jacobson led the Peacocks with 12 points while Otting added 10. Upper Iowa outrebounded the Mavericks 41-35 which included a 21-10 advantage in offensive rebounds but shot only 32.3% (21-of-65) from the floor and 11.1% (2-of-18) from beyond the three-point arc.
Ali Wilkinson and Andrea Walsh paced the Mavericks by netting 20 and 19 points, respectively.
Upper Iowa returns home next Friday night when they welcome the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul to Dorman Gym in Fayette. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
