Oelmann's 59th Minute Goal Lifts Peacocks Over Warriors

Upper Iowa 1 - Waldorf 0

Box Score

The Upper Iowa Men’s Soccer team opened a stretch of three matches in five days Wednesday afternoon by welcoming the Warriors of Waldorf College to Pattison Field in Fayette.  The highly competitive contest racked up 46 total fouls and saw five yellow cards on a mostly cloudy and breezy day in Fayette.  After a scoreless first half, a header from Derek Oelmann in the 59th minute broke the deadlock and allowed the Peacocks to take the match, 1-0.

Even with the wind helping UIU in the first half, the Peacocks would only muster four shots and headed to the locker rooms at half in a goalless tie.  The Peacocks caught a break 14 minutes into the second half when a well-placed cross from Quentin Duquenne found the head of Oelmann to break the deadlock and give Upper Iowa the 1-0 advantage.

Upper Iowa then held off a hard charging Waldorf squad to seal the victory, 1-0.  Waldorf outshot the Peacocks 18-6 which included an 11-2 margin in the second half.  Goalkeeper Jordan Bell played brilliantly in defense of his net.  The freshman turned away seven shots, many of which came late in the match.

With the victory, UIU moves to 2-3-1 in 2010 while Waldorf drops to 4-2-0.

The Peacocks will return to the pitch on Friday when they welcome the Norse of Luther College to Fayette.  The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
