Peacocks Shutout in Final Action of 2010

Box Score

The Upper Iowa Peacock Football team closed the book on the 2010 season Saturday afternoon by visiting a chilly yet sunny Sioux Falls, South Dakota to entertain the #14-ranked Vikings of Augustana College.  The Vikings proved their high national ranking by defeating Upper Iowa, 32-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference clash.

The Vikings took control of the contest right from the opening kickoff as they drove 71 yards in 11 plays which was capped off when Tyler Schulte tossed a 17-yard pass to Sam Holsen for the Augustana score.  After the missed extra point, Augustana held a slim 6-0 advantage.

Upper Iowa’s defensive core found their stride following the opening drive.  The Peacocks allowed just 51 more yards of Augustana offense throughout the remainder of the first half while the home team extended their lead to 13-0 when a Kirby Hovden pass attempt was intercepted and returned 25 yards for an Augie defensive touchdown.

The Peacocks were held to just 41 yards of offense in the first half of action and only gained two first downs against the sixth ranked defense in the nation.

Out of the halftime break, Augustana extended their lead with a pair of third quarter touchdowns sandwiching a safety making the tally 29-0 after three quarters of play and added a field goal in the fourth quarter as the home team cruised to a 32-0 victory.

Augustana grossed 299 yards of total offense for the game with 184 of them coming on the ground while UIU managed just 111 total yards.  The home squad also held an 18-6 advantage in first downs.  Seniors Aaron Miller and Nate Curran led the Peacocks in tackles with 14 and 11 respectively in the final action of their careers.

The game marked the first time that Upper Iowa has been held scoreless since the Peacocks were beaten by Winona State, 41-0 on September 22, 2007.  With the loss, UIU finishes the season with a 2-9 record overall and an 2-8 mark in NSIC play while the Vikings move to 10-1 for the season and 9-1 in league play.
