After taking more than a week off, the Upper Iowa Men's Soccer team returned to action Sunday afternoon by hosting the Marauders of the University of Mary. The Peacocks needed double overtime but completed the season sweep of the Marauders by taking the contest, 2-1.
After a scoreless first half and with U-Mary playing down a man, Peacock forward Derek Oelmann broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 84th minute of action when he headed in a Justin Marchant free kick from the far right sideline to give Upper Iowa the first lead of the match at 1-0.
The University of Mary rallied in the final five minutes and forced the home team to play everyone back to defend the goal when disaster struck for the Peacocks. U-Mary's Kyle Roesler notched the tying goal after an extended scramble in front of the net to tie the contest at 1-1 with just 45 seconds left to play in the match to send the match into overtime.
Upper Iowa outshot the Marauders 13-9 in regulation and took six more shots in the overtime sessions before Oelmann capitalized on the seventh chance to win the match in the 105th minute of action. Following Upper Iowa earning their 10th corner kick of the tilt, Marco Garcia put a perfect corner kick in the air which found the head of Oelmann to mark his ninth goal of 2010 and Garcia's third assist of the season.
Upper Iowa outshot the visitors 20-9 which included a 7-0 margin in the fifteen minutes of overtime. The Peacocks also earned six more corner kicks than the Marauders while committing one more foul than U-Mary.
With the victory, UIU's record improves to 5-4-2 while U-Mary falls to 0-9-0.
The Peacocks will return to action this Wednesday when they host the Cardinals of St. Mary's (MN). The match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
