After having played in great weather conditions throughout much of the 2010 season, the Peacock Men's Soccer team was greeted with cold and breezy conditions as they closed out their season Wednesday afternoon by visiting Dubuque, Iowa to entertain the Crusaders of Clarke University. UIU allowed a one goal halftime lead to slip away before the Peacocks rebounded and took back the contest in the first overtime period, 3-2.
Heading into the final match tied for the NCAA Division II lead in goals, Derek Oelmann added to his tally in the eighth minute of action when he netted an unassisted goal to put UIU on top, 1-0. The Waverly, Iowa-native now has 18 goals in just 17 matches and retook sole possession of the NCAA Division II lead in goals scored.
The teams would combine for 11 more shots in the first half of action, but both teams headed to the halftime break with Upper Iowa leading, 1-0. The Peacocks and Crusaders each fired six shots in the first half while UIU earned one more corner kick than Clarke.
The Crusaders seemed rejuvenated out of the halftime break as they netted the equalizer in the 53rd minute before taking the lead in the 71st minute. This, however, was before Zach Castor became the star of the final match of the season. Castor netted his first goal of the season in the 85th minute to send the match into overtime.
In the ensuing overtime period, the junior defender came through again with just 23 seconds left in the first ten minute overtime session to win the match for Upper Iowa, 3-2. The goal was assisted by Bo Miller.
Upper Iowa outshot Clarke 21-12 in the match as UIU used a 13-5 shot advantage in the second half to seal the comeback bid. Oelmann and Frank Atchison each took three shots while Castor and Marco Garcia each shot twice.
With the win, Upper Iowa finishes the season with a 9-6-2 record while the Crusaders fall to 7-8-2.
