The Upper Iowa Peacock softball program is very pleased to announce their "Strikeout Cancer" doubleheader. These games will take place on Saturday, April 28th in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader against the Northern State University Wolves, with game one scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two to follow shortly thereafter. UIU will be wearing special uniforms for the doubleheader that will then be auctioned off online with donations going towards Cancer Research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Last season Upper Iowa held a "Strikeout Melanoma Day" against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, in support of Melanoma research. The team wore special uniforms with a black Melanoma ribbon on the front and auctioned the jerseys off. Sophomore Erin Drahozal caught the ceremonial first pitch from her mother Kelly, who is battling Melanoma. It was a special moment prior to game one as the team honored a member of the Upper Iowa Peacock family. The program raised $525 for Melanoma research.
Playing in this game means a lot for these Student-Athletes. Not only do they get to play the sport they love, but they also get to help those in need. "Cancer is an incredibly hard thing for families to deal with and if we can help in any way I am proud to say that I am a part of it," explained senior catcher Shannon Nix. This game will be the third one that she'll be a part of.
UIU will be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to Cancer Research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Fans will also can purchase a raffle ticket to win a jersey that will be raffled off. As shown in the image, the jerseys feature "UPPER IOWA" written across the front, along with the uniform number below. There is also a cancer ribbon that is displayed on the front and back of the jersey. The shoulders and jersey trim are navy to continue with the UIU color scheme with the Peacock blue front and back. The Peacock shield logo is on the right shoulder, while "STRIKEOUT CANCER" is written on the left shoulder.
