JACKSON, Tenn. - Peacock volleyball (3-1) went 2-0 on Saturday to wrap up the Union University (Tenn.) volleyball classic. The Peacocks came back from down two sets to one for a five-set win over Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) (2-2), then beat the host team, Union (2-2), in four sets.
Marissa Becker and Kailey Porter led the Peacock attack, totaling 27 kills and 24 kills, respectively. Morgan Block led the team in digs with 47 after playing all nine sets on the day. Grace Fruzen posted 46 assists (6.57/set).Â
This marks the team's first 3-1 start since the 2022 season. The Peacocks head to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, next week for the Sioux Falls Classic, starting with a match against No. 8 Washburn at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 4.
Upper Iowa 3, Auburn Montgomery 2 (23-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-15, 15-9)
The Peacocks fell in the third set, 25-13, to put them in danger of losing their second match of the weekend. UIU responded very well to start the fourth scoring eight straight points for an early 8-1 advantage, including two aces by Claire Edwards.Â
After AUM cut the lead to 12-11, UIU scored six straight points, five off of kills, to reclaim a seven-point lead. UIU went on to win the set, 25-15. Leading 10-9 in the fifth, Upper Iowa scored five straight points, starting with back-to-back kills by Fruzen to win 15-9.Â
Porter led the Peacocks in kills with 16, Becker totaled 13 and Gracen Klima added 11. Caylee Rowley totaled 30 assists and Fruzen added 17. Block led the Peacocks with 23 digs.Â
Upper Iowa 3, Union 1 (20-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-23)
Becker kept her momentum going into the second match of the day, totaling 14 kills. After losing the first set, UIU rallied to win the next three, 25-12, 25-19, 25-23, and the Peacocks hit .467 in the third set.Â
Fruzen posted 29 assists, with Block adding five. They were also UIU's digs leaders, with Block totaling 24 and Fruzen totaling 13. Brooke Krogmann and Porter each added eight digs.Â
UIU totaled 48 kills to Union's 41. The Peacocks also had 10 more digs than the Bulldogs, with 10. Upper Iowa totaled 12 aces to Union's 11.
