SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Gabe Bombardier hit two home runs, Brock Zimmer smacked a homer and JJ Vargas hit a home run in UIU's (15-21, 8-11 GLVC) 13-7 loss to Drury (Mo.) (23-16, 14-7 GLVC) on Friday evening.
Bombardier went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs. Zimmer brought in two RBIs on his early home run. Vargas' solo home run marked the 29th of his career, one short of Gunnar Wicklund for the program record of career homers.Â
Cael Luzum totaled two singles with an RBI as the leadoff hitter. Jayce Klug smacked an RBI triple to right-center in the fourth inning.Â
With the Peacocks leading 7-6 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers had the first five batters reach base in the inning to take an 8-7 lead. Drury added four more runs to total a six-run inning on three hits, four walks, one hit-by-pitch and a Peacock error.
The Peacocks struck first with back-to-back home runs in the first inning by Zimmer and Bombardier. Luzum singled to start the game to get a runner on base, putting UIU up 3-0.Â
Drury responded with a single and two doubles in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3-3. The Panthers took a 5-3 lead after the second inning with a Connor Bain two-out, 2RBI double.
Bombardier responded with a two-out homer in the top of the third, cutting the lead to 5-4. A Vargas solo homer to lead off the fourth inning tied the game. After Hunter Jones walked, Klug tripled and Luzum singled to lead, 7-5.Â
Drury added a run in the bottom of the fourth with a Logan Reidelberger RBI single to trail, 7-6. The Panthers' final run of the game came in the seventh on a Carter Wambach RBI double.
Gabe Olson pitched the first four innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Brett Nicodemus took the loss in one inning of relief, giving up five earned runs on four hits, two walks and a strikeout.Â
Bain led Drury batting 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a double. He also walked twice. Wambach and Colin McClure each tallied two doubles, with McClure hitting a game-high four hits. Drury's Kaleb Thomas earned the win in the start, improving his record to 6-1. He allowed seven runs on eight hits, one walk and six strikeouts.
The Panthers outhit the Peacocks, 16-8, with Drury totaling eight doubles as a team. Drury committed three errors while Upper Iowa committed one. Peacock batters were walked twice, while Panther batters were walked seven times.Â
The teams will meet up again at Meador Park for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. Sunday's series finale is scheduled for noon.
