WEST LIBERTY, Iowa - UIU baseball (7-10) dropped the final two games of nonconference play to Wisconsin-Parkside (11-5). The Peacocks lost game one, 6-0, and game two, 6-2, both in seven innings.Â
JJ Vargas led UIU on the day with two hits and a solo homer in game two. Thane Meiners also had two hits with an RBI triple, his first of the season. Cael Luzum added two hits with a double, and Trevor Kelling smacked a double in one of his two plate appearances.Â
On the mound, Kirill Landry, Hudson Ivey and Tyler Glowacki didn't allow runs in their short appearances. Landry allowed no hits, one walk and threw two strikeouts. Ivey threw one strikeout without allowing a hit or a walk. Glowacki allowed one hit and threw two strikeouts.Â
The Peacocks start GLVC play this upcoming weekend against Lincoln (Mo.) (3-11). UIU is scheduled to play at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 13, in Jefferson City, Missouri.Â
Game One: Parkside 6, Upper Iowa 0
Parkside scored in the first inning after Jon Mrowiec reached on a single. After getting to third base, he scored when the Peacocks threw down to second base on a steal attempt, getting the out on a pickle play but allowing Mrowiec to score.Â
The Rangers added three runs in the third inning on a walk and three hits, including a double. Parkside scored two more runs in the sixth with four walks, a wild pitch and a Peacock error for the 6-0 lead.Â
UIU's best opportunity came in the fifth inning while trailing 4-0. After Ero Wallin walked, Kelling smacked a double to put runners on second and third with one out. A strikeout and groundout on the ensuing at-bats ended the inning.Â
Both teams had four hits, while Kelling and Parkside's Trace Kirchburg had the lone extra-base hits with doubles. Vargas, Meiners and Jayce Klug had the other three hits for UIU. The Rangers walked seven times compared to three for the Peacocks.Â
Parkside's Brennen Miller got the win, pitching five innings with four strikeouts, two hits and two walks. Isaiah Maes picked up the loss after starting for UIU and pitching four innings while giving up four earned runs, four hits and three walks with a strikeout. Garrett Konz threw a team-high three strikeouts.Â
UWP's pitching staff totaled six strikeouts, and UIU's totaled five. The Peacocks left seven runners on base compared to five for the Rangers. Upper Iowa had the only error of the game.Â
Game Two: Parkside 6, Upper Iowa 2
Parkside led off the game with back-to-back doubles by Nolan Maciejewski and Ben Loyd, scoring the first run. A bases-loaded walk scored the second run of the inning for an early 2-0 lead.Â
RBI singles in the third and fifth innings by John Wubben upped the lead to 4-0. Loyd hit an RBI single in the sixth, and Mrowiec hit a sacrifice fly for UWP's second 6-0 lead of the day.Â
A JJ Vargas solo shot to left field scored UIU's first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning. After two strikeouts in the seventh inning, Brandon Lund wore a pitch to get on base. Meiners brought him in with an RBI triple smacked to the right corner of the field for the final run of the game, 6-2.Â
Parkside totaled eight hits while Upper Iowa totaled five, and neither team committed an error. UWP was walked five times while UIU was walked once. The Parkside pitching staff totaled 12 strikeouts to Upper Iowa's six.Â
Luzum was 2-for-3 with a double in the third inning. Meiners was 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk. Ethan Bombardier and Tyler Glowacki both threw a team-high two strikeouts. Bombardier allowed three hits and three earned runs in three innings pitched, taking the loss.Â
Maciejewski and Loyd had the only extra-base hits of the game for the Rangers. Wubben was 3-for-3 at the plate after subbing in at designated hitter. Leo Berger got the wind on the mound for Parkside after throwing nine strikeouts in five innings while allowing three hits, a walk and two hit-by-pitches.
