UIU drops pair of games against Quincy despite heroics in game one

Laughlin highlights the day going six-fo-seven at the plate (.857 batting percentage)

FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa softball (4-23, 0-4 GLVC) dropped its doubleheader against Quincy (Ill.) (6-22, 2-4 GLVC). The Peacocks lost the first game, 12-10, in eight innings and the second game, 7-2.

Dani Laughlin went six-of-seven (.857 batting average) with a double, three RBIs, a sacrifice fly and scored three runs. She also had seven putouts in center field. Dorothy Ziebell had a game-tying grand slam in game one for four RBIs. She also had a double and scored two runs. Sara Reid pitched eight innings, allowing three earned runs on 16 hits with five strikeouts. She also totaled three RBIs and a hit with a double at the plate.

Upper Iowa plays another doubleheader at home on Sunday. UIU plays Truman State (Mo.) (9-19, 1-3 GLVC) at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. 

Game One: Quincy 12, Upper Iowa 10 (8 inn.)
The Hawks took an early 3-0 advantage after scoring three runs in the top of the first. The runs came with a Kaidence Dumas 2RBI home run and a Samantha Farrell solo homer. 

The Peacocks answered in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own. Jescie Comstock connected with a single for her at bat, before scoring a run off a Reid fielder's choice. 

Quincy added more runs at the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead when Casey Fronheiser hit a 2RBI home run. Upper Iowa answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning. Addyson Alber doubled down the right field line at the top of the order. She later crossed home plate with a Laughlin sacrifice lineout to left field. 

QU scored two more runs in the sixth inning. Fronheiser drove in both runs after connecting for a left-center 2RBI single. 

UIU tied the game and sent it into extra innings after scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh. The first run came after Lauglin singled up the middle, scoring Emma Tautges

Ziebell then knocked the play of the day, with a grand slam to left field, tying the game at 7-7. This was her first home run of the season, which sent the game to extra innings. 

The Hawks took a 12-7 lead in the top of the eighth inning. The first run was scored on a Peacock error, while the other four runs were scored off singles by Farrell, Hailee Irby and Catherine Nielsen. 

The Peacocks added three runs off their own in the bottom of the inning, but it came up short QU was able to hold on to win. Laughlin brought home Taylor Hamaker with an RBI bunt single. Reid then hit a two-out, 2RBI double to bring in another pair. 

Ziebell totaled four RBIs, two hits and scored a run. Laughlin recorded three RBIs, two hits and scored a run. Reid had three RBIs and a hit, while Proud posted a hit and scored a run. Reid also pitched eight innings, giving up three earned runs on 16 hits. The senior also struck out five batters. 

Ferrell finished with three hits, two RBIs and scored two runs. Moss recorded two RBIs, a hit and scored a run. Dumas had two RBIs, a hit and scored a run. Alexus Freeman threw 6.2 innings, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. She posted three strikeouts. 

Upper Iowa had 10 RBIs, 11 hits, four walks, four errors and left eight batters on base. Quincy recorded 11 RBIs, 16 hits, and left nine batters on base. 

Game Two: Quincy 7, Upper Iowa 2 
During the top of the second inning, Nielsen drove in the first run of the game. She hit a double towards left center field, allowing her teammate Farrell to cross home plate. 

UIU responded by ripping off two runs of its own. The momentum started with a Laughlin right-centerfield single and a Ziebell walk. Laughlin later scored the first run off a Tautges groundout, while Ziebell scored the second run off an Elliott Pomeroy sacrifice fly.  

The Hawks took a 4-2 lead after scoring three runs in the fourth. Makala Koozer connected for a center field 2RBI single, and the third run of the inning was when Fronheiser connected on a double through the left side. 

Quincy held on to win 7-2 after adding three runs in the sixth. Kenzie Moss drove home two of the runs off a double, while Farrell drove home the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Laughlin led the team with a double on four hits, while notching a run of her own. Pomeroy posted two hits and an RBI. Comstock connected for a hit, while Tautges tailed an RBI. Ziebell pitched seven five innings on the mound, allowing five earned runs on five walks and eight hits. The sophomore also recorded a strikeout.

Koozer had two hits, an RBI and scored two runs. Fronheiser finished with two hits, two RBIs and a walk. Moss mustered two hits, two walks and an RBI. Haley Martin pitched seven innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks. She also struck out six batters. 

The Peacocks posted seven hits, two walks, two RBIs and left nine batters on base. The Hawks had nine hits, five walks, six RBIs and left eight batters on base. Upper Iowa recorded the game's lone error.
