FAYETTE, Iowa - Upper Iowa baseball (11-11, 4-1 GLVC) fell in its home opener to Maryville (Mo.) (11-10, 5-0 GLVC) on Friday, 11-0, in eight innings. The Saints totaled 11 hits against the Peacocks with 10 singles, scoring six of their runs in the sixth inning.
Cael Luzum, Gabe Bombardier, Hunter Jones and Paul Safranski all had hits for the Peacocks. Bombardier, Jones and Safranski each had a double. Jared Hoodjer and Bombardier both walked. Gabe Olson totaled five strikeouts in the start, and Brett Nicodemus had six strikeouts in relief.
Maryville started the scoring in the bottom of the second. An RBI triple to center field by Dominic Sharp and an RBI single to third base by Brady Kindhart put the Saints up, 2-0. Maryville added a run in the fifth on three straight singles and an RBI single by Jack Meyer.
The six-run sixth inning came on four singles, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a Peacock error. The Saints went through the entire order in the inning. Steven Schneider reached on a throwing error in the eighth to bring in two runs for the 11-0 lead.
Olson took his first loss of the season on the mound. He gave up six hits, two walks and three earned runs to go along with his five strikeouts. Nicodemus pitched three innings in relief after entering his second-straight game with the bases loaded. He didn't allow any earned runs with two hits and a walk, striking out six of the 13 batters he faced.
Maryville's Braeden Sunken got the win on the mound, improving his record to 4-2. He gave up four hits and two walks with five strikeouts after pitching all eight innings for a complete game.
Both teams had two errors. The Peacocks left five runners stranded compared to seven for Maryville.
The Peacocks and Saints return to Robertson Woods Field for a doubleheader of seven-inning games starting at 1 p.m. The series wraps up with a nine-inning game on Sunday at noon.
