BRANSON, Mo. - Upper Iowa softball (0-4) dropped both games on day two of the Branson Lead-Off Classic. The Peacocks lost, 6-1, to Arkansas Tech (2-2) and, 1-0, to Northwestern Oklahoma State (3-1) on Monday.Â
Sara Reid had a solid day on the mound, pitching seven innings and recording six strikeouts. The Central City native did not record a walk against Northwestern Oklahoma State.Â
Upper Iowa continues play on Friday and Sunday at the Rogers State Festival. UIU faces #18 Rogers State (Okla.) at 10 a.m. and Southwestern Oklahoma State (0-5) at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Â
Arkansas Tech 6, Upper Iowa 1
The Golden Suns scored the first two runs of the game off a double by Aly White in the first inning. Arkansas Tech later hit a sacrifice fly to center field to increase the lead to 3-0.Â
Neither team scored in the second, and the Peacocks were held scoreless in the third. However, in the bottom of the third, the Golden Suns capitalized on an Aalyiah Dixon double and brought her in on a sacrifice bunt to take a 4-0 advantage.Â
Upper Iowa answered Arkansas Tech in the top of the fifth inning. Reagon Proud started the inning by connecting for a single towards center field. She later advanced to third off a wild pitch by the Golden Suns. Cara Farnham brought home Proud on a sacrifice bunt to trail, 4-1.Â
However, Tech added two runs in the bottom of the inning. The team scored runs off a two-run single by Destiney Madewell into right field. The Golden Suns beat the Peacocks, 6-1.Â
Kaitlin Foral, Proud and Emma Tautges each recorded a hit. Proud scored UIU's only run, and Farnam had the team's only RBI. Dorothy Ziebell pitched six innings, allowing six hits and six earned runs. The sophomore also recorded two strikeouts.Â
Arkansas Tech's Destiney Madewell had two RBIs and connected on two hits. White scored one run and recorded two RBIs on her single. Pitcher Ainslee Moore pitched six innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. The Bradley, Arkansas, native also had five strikeoutsÂ
There were zero errors in the game. The Peacocks left four batters on base compared to the ATU's eight. Tech walked three times, while UIU walked two. There were a total of 14 hits in the game, 11 by Arkansas Tech and three by Upper Iowa.Â
Northwestern Oklahoma State 1, Upper Iowa 0
UIU's Foral recorded the first hit of the game with a single to right field. Reid struck out six batters through the first six innings, including three-straight in the second.Â
Northwestern Oklahoma St. got the bats going in the seventh inning, singling towards right field. Later, a single by Delaynie Esterly to right field brought home the Rangers' runner on third. In the bottom of the inning, Ziebell doubled to center field with two outs to give the Peacocks a spark, but a flyout on the next at-bat ended the game, 1-0.Â
Upper had three hits total off Foral, Dani Laughlin and Ziebell. Reid pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. The senior struck out six batters.Â
Northwestern Oklahoma State was led by Esterley, who had two hits and an RBI that brought home Raelynn Sandlin for the game's only run. Katy Jones was at the mound for seven innings, allowing three hits. She recorded four strikeouts in the victory.Â
UIU was the only team to commit an error and the only team to get a walk. The Rangers posted five hits to the Peacocks' three.
