Proud powers Peacocks in 1-1 showing in day two of the Invitational

The Oskosh, Wisconsin native totaled five hits and scored six runs against Roosevelt and Concordia-St. Paul

Rosemont, Ill. - Upper Iowa softball (2-14) split its two games on Friday in the Lewis Flyers Dome Invitational. The Peacocks lost their first contest to Roosevelt (Ill.) (4-2), 9-8, but beat Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) (4-3), 8-4 in their second contest. 

Reagan Proud tallied five hits, scored six runs, added two doubles, recorded an RBI and drew two walks. Dani Laughlin also recorded five hits, driving in four runs and scoring twice. Jescie Comstock scored three runs, notched an RBI, added a hit and walked twice.

Sara Reid earned her second win of the season, pitching 7.1 innings combined in the two games with nine strikeouts. She allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks. 

UIU wraps up the invitational tomorrow against Bemidji State (Minn.) (2-7) at 9 a.m. and Hillsdale (Mich.) (2-5) at 1:30 p.m. The Peacocks are 1-3 in the tournament thus far. 

Roosevelt 9, Upper Iowa 8

RU's Cassidy Sullivan hit a single at the top of the first, allowing the second base runner to score. UIU took a 3-1 lead at the bottom of the inning, after notching three of their own.

The first run came when Laughlin connected for a single down the infield line, bringing home Reagon Proud. The second run came after Emma Tautges reached first on a fielder's choice, advancing Laughlin to third and Jescie Comstock to home plate. The final run was scored with a Cara Farnam single towards the middle of the field, driving home Laughlin.

Roosevelt recorded two more runs in the second off singles by Sophia Barofsky and Ella Dvoracek. The Lakers added another run at the top of the third after Caitlin Williams scored off a passed ball. 

The Peacocks took a 7-5 advantage at the bottom of the inning. Elliot Pomeroy walked to start the batting order. She later crossed home plate off an Ella Perkins single. Perkins then scored after Kaitlin Foral reached base on a fielder's choice. Laughlin later hits a single to left field, driving home Comstock and Proud.

Mara Sivley scored Upper Iowa's final run of the game in the fifth inning when she crushed a home run to the left side of the dome. Roosevelt rattled off three more runs in the game to win 8-7. The first run came in the sixth inning off a Sullivan single, while the final two runs were scored in the seventh off a Peacock error. 

Proud posted a hit, notched two of her own runs and had two walks. Laughlin had three RBIs, connected for two hits, and scored a run. Perkins had an RBI, recorded a hit and crossed home plate once. Farnam finished with two hits and an RBI, while Comstock scored two runs.

Along with hitting her first career home run, Sivley struck out three batters after pitching 5.2 innings. The freshman also allowed 11 hits, seven runs, three walks and six earned runs.

Kendall Pearson recorded four hits and scored twice, while Sullivan added two hits and drove in three runs. Sophia Barofsky tallied two RBIs, scored two runs and added a hit.

Catie Luzzi and Riley Czarnecki each pitched three innings for the Lakers. Luzzi allowed seven earned runs on six hits with four walks, striking out three. Czarnecki surrendered just one hit while allowing no runs and no walks, and struck out four.

UIU had nine hits, eight RBIs, left 12 batters on base and was walked four times. RU recorded 13 hits, five RBIs, left seven batters on base and was walked four times. Upper Iowa totaled three errors, to Roosevelt's one. 

Upper Iowa 8, Concordia-St. Paul 4
Proud posted the game's first double in the first inning. Comstock later hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Proud to score from third. The Peacocks took a 3-0 lead off Golden Bear errors, as Pomeroy reached first on a throwing error that allowed Laughlin to advance to third and Foral to score. Laughlin eventually scored the final run of the inning for the Peacocks.

Concordia-St. Paul scored in the bottom of the second on an Ava Blake single. In the top of the third, Proud led off with a double and then stole third. Comstock followed with a walk, and during a later sequence, Proud stole home to score. Comstock eventually stole second, and Laughlin singled to first to drive her in, giving Upper Iowa a 5-1 lead.

CSP attempted a final run in the fourth, scoring twice on a Nora Brandt single and a UIU error that allowed Alexis Monty to score. Tautges stopped Concordia's comeback attempt in the fifth with a sacrifice fly that brought Proud home. 

Upper Iowa secured the 8-4 win with two more runs in the sixth. The first came on Proud's final double of the game, which scored Kaylee Marhefke, and the second came on a throwing error following Comstock's bunt that allowed Proud to cross the plate.

Proud had an RBI, went 4-for-4 at the plate, and scored four runs. Laughlin went 3-for-4, scored a run and had an RBI. Comstock collected a hit, posted an RBI, scored a run and was walked once.

Reid pitched all seven innings, striking out eight batters. The senior also allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks. 

Katie Klotz connected for two hits for Concordia, crossing home plate twice. Ashlyn Peterson and Brandt both recorded a hit and an RBI. Emmy Bowne pitched for six innings, boasting three strikeouts. She gave up five earned runs off 10 hits and a walk. 

The Peacocks posted 10 hits, four RBIs, a walk, and four errors. The Golden Bears had six hits, three RBIs, two walks and three errors. UIU left four batters on base, while CSP left seven.
