FAYETTE, Iowa - The Peacock men's wrestling team (5-5, 3-1 GLVC) showed out for Mike Olson Alumni Day on Sunday with a 46-0 win over Quincy (Ill.) (8-5, 1-3 GLVC). This marked the second shutout in three contests for the Peacocks against the Hawks.
Treyton Ackman (125), Tanner Arjes (141), No. 8 Ethen Doty (149), Preston Klostermann (157), Griffin Luke (174), No. 15 Braxten Westendorf (184) and Matthew Marcum (197) all picked up bonus-point wins for the Peacocks. Arjes, Doty and Luke improved to 4-0 in GLVC play.
Ackman started the night by picking up a forfeit at 125 pounds. After that, Dawson Schmit used a first-period takedown, a one-point penalty and a reversal for a 6-1 win. Arjes and Doty kept it rolling with back-to-back falls, putting the Peacocks up 21-0.
Klostermann defeated Isaiah Nichols by a 15-6 major decision at 157 pounds. Nichols led 3-1 after the opening period, but Klostermann took a 5-3 lead in the second with an escape and a takedown. The Peacock true freshman then tallied three takedowns in the third to secure the major decision.
Nick Mueller (165) started with a takedown and a four-point nearfall for an early 7-0 lead against Jackson Jones. Jones used an escape, a takedown and a two-point nearfall to lose in a 13-7 decision, despite Mueller having over 2:50 of riding time. Luke recorded four takedowns en route to a second-period 18-3 tech fall win over Dalton Schell.
Westendorf wrangled two takedowns, two four-point nearfalls and two two-point nearfalls to win with a second-period 18-0 tech fall. Marcum recorded three takedowns and two four-point nearfalls for the first-period 17-2 tech fall.
Hunter Bye (285) wrapped up the day in the heavyweight match against Donnell Packer. An early takedown gave Packer a 3-1 advantage entering the second period. Bye responded quickly in the second, getting a takedown for a 4-3 lead. Two stalling warnings gave the redshirt senior another point. He added an escape and riding time in the third for a 7-3 decision victory.
Under head coach Heath Grimm, now in his 26th season at the helm of the UIU program, the Peacocks have posted 17 shutouts in 14 different seasons. Upper Iowa defeated Knox College, 54-0, and Illinois College, 57-0, in Grimm's first year at the helm. The Peacocks defeated UNC Pembroke, 47-0, at the National Duals in 2006, Northern State, 45-0, in an NSIC dual in 2007, a perfect 60-0 shutout of Wagner in 2009 at the Sprawl and Brawl Duals and a 41-0 NSIC dual win over MSU Moorhead in 2010. During the 2012-13 season, the Peacocks defeated Waldorf College, 53-0, and in 2013-14, UIU claimed three shutouts, including wins over Hannibal-LaGrange, 58-0, Calumet College, 57-0, and Northern State, 47-0. The Peacocks claimed a 45-0 victory over the UMary in January 2015 and a 56-0 win over Truman State in November 2018. UIU defeated Waldorf University, 57-0, and Southwest Minnesota State, 41-0, in 2022. The Peacocks picked up a shutout in December 2024, 45-0, over Quincy. UIU started action this season with a 57-0 win over Hawkeye CC for the 17th shutout.
With the win, UIU improves to 4-1 in GLVC play. The Peacocks wrap up conference action against Drury (Mo.) (2-10, 0-4 GLVC) for Senior Night on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium.
