Peacocks make quick work of opening-day opponents at Midwest Region Crossover

Fruzen totals 59 assists, and Block adds 41 digs in UIU’s wins in Hammond

HAMMOND, Ind. - Peacock women's volleyball (9-10, 3-5 GLVC) picked up two wins on Friday at the Midwest Region Crossover. UIU defeated Lake Superior State (Mich.) (4-15, 1-9 GLIAC) in four sets (25-18, 25-20, 15-25, 25-18) and Thomas More (Ohio) (7-12, 3-6 G-MAC) in three sets (25-13, 25-16, 25-17).

It was status quo for junior setter Grace Fruzen, totaling 59 assists (8.43/set), 21 digs (3.0/set) and a team-high seven service aces to average one per set. Fruzen pushed her double-double streak to 10 matches with 30 assists and 15 digs vs. Lake Superior State.

Junior libero Morgan Block led the Peacocks in digs with 41 (5.86/set), which was above her GLVC-leading 5.48 digs per set average this season. She was a perfect 19-for-19 on serve receptions and added three service aces.

Erica Conger was a monster in the first game against the Lakers, totaling 15 kills (3.75/set), three digs, two service aces and a block. She totaled 17.5 points in the match, tying for the most in a four-set match by a Peacock player this season. She also added a .407 hitting percentage, the fifth-highest for a UIU player this year.

Kailey Porter and Gracen Klima came alive against Thomas More. Porter totaled 11 kills and a .450 hitting percentage while Klima had 10 kills and a .400 hitting percentage.

Natalie Bystol played all seven sets at outside hitter, leading the Peacocks with 18 kills (2.57/set) on the day. Faith Fisher added 13 kills in seven sets with two blocks. Alexis Moses added eight kills and a team-high five blocks.

The Peacocks are back in action on Saturday at 9 a.m. to wrap up the Midwest Region Crossover. UIU faces Kentucky Wesleyan (4-15, 1-8 G-MAC) on court seven at the Hammond Sportsplex. A win would mark the second 3-0 weekend for the Peacocks at the Crossover in program history (2024).

The Peacocks got back above the .300 hitting mark with a .312 third set. With UIU trailing 12-10, three Saint attack errors and kills by Moses and Klima created a 10-1 UIU run to lead 16-12. A kill by Ketelsen, along with a block by her and Porter, helped UIU win the set, 25-17.
