FAYETTE, Iowa - The No. 21 Upper Iowa men's wrestling team (1-1) suffered its first dual loss of the season to Minnesota State (6-1). Braxten Westendorf (184) and Matthew Marcum (197) picked up wins via decision in the 33-6 loss.
Westendorf started the match at 184 with a 10-3 victory over Jaquon East. He got out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and a four-point near fall.
Marcum trailed 5-1 entering the third period vs. Grant Cook. In the final 30 seconds, he picked up two four-point near falls to flip the match, 10-5. He added a point on riding time for the 11-5 victory.
The Mavericks then won the next eight matches with two falls, three major decisions and three decisions. Minnesota State held a 21-6 advantage on total takedowns and a 7-3 advantage on near falls.
The loss snapped a four-match win streak for the Peacocks against the Mavericks. Upper Iowa is 9-7 against Minnesota State since 2010-11.
Upper Iowa returns to action this upcoming weekend on Jan. 9-10 at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
