Peacocks drop second-straight game to Rockhurst on Saturday

Hrncir scores a team-high 21 points in 100-89 loss

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - UIU men's basketball (13-5, 8-3 GLVC) lost its second game of the week to Rockhurst (Mo.) (14-5, 8-3 GLVC), 100-89 on Saturday. Kyle Hrncir scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half.

Rockhurst was red hot from the field in the game, shooting 7-of-7 with a 5-of-5 mark from behind the arc in the first seven and a half minutes. They finished the game 29-for-54 (53.7%) from the field and 9-for-19 (47.8%) from three. The Peacocks went 32-for-63 (50.8%) from the floor and 6-for-21 (28.6%) from beyond the arc. UIU was 19-for-26 (73.1%) from the charity stripe, while RU was 33-for-34 (97.1%).

Hrncir led Upper Iowa in scoring with 21 points, shooting 7-for-14 (50%) from the floor. He also had a team-high seven rebounds and one assist. Trey Lewis scored the second-most points on the team with 15. The senior also had a team-best seven assists, two steals and a block.

Drenin Dinkins led RU in scoring with 29 points, shooting 10-for-12 (50%) from the field. The guard went 15-for-15 from the free-throw line. Jack Scott had a team-second-best 24 points. 

Rockhurst started to separate itself from UIU five minutes into the game after going on a 14-4 run. The run gave the Hawks a 29-18 lead with 11:09. 

Ashton Hermann sparked a 12-4 run for the Peacocks with a jumpshot. The run lasted three minutes and decreased Upper Iowa's deficit, 39-35. UIU was 5-for-5 from the field during this run and 2-for-2 from three. 

However, on the next possession, Rockhurst's Drenin Jenkins hit a 3-pointer to extend the team's lead to seven. Micah Deaver scored a 3-pointer and converted an and-one during the last minute and a half of the period to give RU the 52-38 halftime advantage.

The Hawks made 5-of-7 (71.4%) shot attempts and 2-of-3 (66.7%) threes in the first five minutes of the second half to extend the lead to 64-44. During that same stretch, Upper Iowa shot 2-for-6 (33.3%) from the field and 1-for-2 (50%) from beyond the arc. 

Upper Iowa cut RU's lead to 94-80 with 3:57 remaining on a jumper by Trey Lewis and free throws from Tate Petersen. During the final minutes of the game, the Peacocks scored five unanswered points, cutting the deficit to 11. The run came on a free throw by Lewis, a layup from Cael Reichter and a jump shot by Hermann. The Hawks held on for a 100-89 victory.

Hermann was a sparkplug for UIU, scoring 13 points going 5-for-8 (62.5%) from the field.  He added a rebound and an assist on the night. Petersen and Reichter scored eight points, while Zach Erwin scored seven. 

Upper Iowa had 29 rebounds to Rockhurst's 31. Both teams scored 38 points in the paint. UIU had 35 bench points to RU's 16. The Hawks lead for 37:08 (92.8%) of the game. 

The Peacocks return to Fayette for their next upcoming matchups. They play Southwest Baptist (Mo.) (10-9, 4-7 GLVC) on Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. and play Drury (Mo.) (9-10, 4-7 GLVC) on Jan. 31 at 3 p.m.
